Yea, it does seem that way. Last season's debacle was a prime example. Both teams did their best to lose the game but tried just a bit harder.

And what happened with USCe and Auburn. You should have won the games you needed to. Quit your bitching and move on.

Thought we did when we beat UGA.

But in the end I guess its not so bad. UGA took a beat down in the SEC title game and thus ended up in the Outback, where we would've ended up if we had lost the SECCG.

Instead we got the Captial One, excited SC fans (tired of Outback), beatdown Nebraska and watch UGA crumble against MSU (who is coached by Dantonio.. a former Gamecock player)

When kids actually see the financial ramifications of a decision to turn pro; it changes things. It is what it is. If Lattimore does in fact return, congrats to him on his decision. But shear odds say he will go.

If he gets a top 2-3 round grade, he has to go. RB with one knee surgery, very risky to play another year of CFB.

Lattimore planed on being at Carolina until he graduated when he comitted and wants to get his degree. With him just now getting back to top form after his injury I think he will stay for another year. With his reduced production last year and the first part of this year he won't be as attractive to NFL teams. If he finishes this year at the levels he played before his injury, and is lights out next year he would greatly improve his draft status. That's my main reasoning as to why he will return.

Any other position you might be correct. However, he is a running back who scouts already feared was getting to many carries. Bottom line is they rb's have a limited amount of carries. He would be forfeiting several million dollars in long term money if he came back.

Same reason Alabama fans who thought Trent was coming back were being foolish.

No disputing any of that, but since it looks like SC is going to be around for a while I would remind you that although the fan base thinks that the UGA game is the super bowl and mardi gras all rolled up into one, there are actually other games on the schedule that need to be won to win out the East. Jus sayin...

Hell, Bama lost to their biggest rival in the West, didn't even make the SECC, and still became National Champ. Go figure.

All well and good. Glad it worked out better for the Cocks in the end, but why are all the others so butthurt about it. You know the rules going into the season. Why bitch about them after they don't work for you. There was no one complaining about them before last year.

News Bulletin: a lot of kids in college that are juniors get very bad advice from different sources....classmates and friends tell em "man yo, go get the green". If a kid has EXTREME family hardship then I understand.

The difference in the $$ a kid can make being a top ten pick and being 22nd to 32nd pick overall is substantial. Some of these kids sign for peanuts. The NFL is a club of billionaires. They dont care about winning as much as the bank account. They dont give away $$ and the amounts that are ballyhooed in the media about huge contracts can be very misleading...a lot contracts for "star players drafted high (see RG3)" are personal contracts with team ownership and include commercials and appearances and merchandise $$, insurance policies and annuities that means that 1 million now is probably worth a lot less in 15 or 20 yrs.

If a kid can improve his standing in the next years draft he should wait. Insurance policies cost little to cover permanent injury...few ever happen really...and the kid pays for it after getting out of school. If a player is a jr and is projected as top ten pick then he has good reason to leave if he wants. I respect the UF basketball squad under Donovan that returned for junior yrs to win second NC.

As for the OPs question...Spurrier could be around at SC a while yet. He could be another Bowden, who knows? Just hope he doesnt stay too long....Bowden got where he didnt know what day of the week it was at times.

To get the thread back on track:
1. Lattimore is a special enough person that he might actually stay his senior year and graduate. Spurrier will probably advise him to go pro because RB's really do have a shorter career than any other position -- and most likely Latt will go pro.
2. USC has solid depth at running back with Mike Davis and Brandon Wilds. We will be fine at the position. We have also recruited well everywhere else, so USC will be a contender for the foreseeable future. The biggest reason is that with Connor Shaw, the HBC finally has a stable winner at QB.
3. Hard to say on how much longer Spurrier stays. His health is good, and he really likes this team and university. he will stay as long as he is having fun. I believe he promised Conner Mitch that he would be there throughout his commitment, so that gives us another 4 years. Regardless, he's not going to give any preview, but I bet once he decides to retire, he will make an early enough announcement to allow the AD to hire the successor. He won't suddenly quit like he did at Florida - he's learned that lesson.
4. So long as he has stability at QB, Spurrier will be competing for an SEC title. I think he gets it -- quite possibly this year.

he's heck of a coach. as long as he's there they have a shot at East division every year.

but he'll need elite recruiting classes to win some BCS bowls though.

Steve understands that the time is now. UT and UF have been down. He's not naive and knows that both will be back to form at some point, with UF closer to that goal than UT for now.

I'm sort of torn on his continuation in coaching. He's laboring physically out there and it's getting hard to watch. He's also pushing close to 70 and I don't want him to Bobby Bowden his way out of town.

I would also like for him to have some time left to return home to his hero's welcome and be involved at UF in some capacity before it's too late for him to enjoy that part of his life.

If UF doesn't win the East then I would like Steve to go to Atlanta even though the two or three jackass Carolina fans here would be completely obnoxious.

This board needs an ignore function in a bad way.

understand that. Spurrier has done a great job turning USCe into a competitive team year in and year out, but I don't know if they're to the point where they could make multiple runs at a SEC title in the span of 2-3 years. Not yet at least.

2010: Won SEC East
2011: undefeated against East teams but choked against Auburn to not win east
2012: Definitely in the mix to win east

that sounds like 2-3 consecutive runs at the East to me

To emphasize how well Spurrier has done, Lou Holtz was 3-21 against UGA, Florida, Tennessee and Clemson -- and never beat UF & UT. Spurrier swept the "big 3" in the East the last two years.

I'm actually rather impressed with his recruiting as a whole, not just the glitz of high star value. If you look at our last three classes then you would see that they are covering nearly ever position. So he is bringing in waves of talented teams, not just players. I value this staffs evaluation of talent a ton more than Rivals or Scout. Our starting QB right now was rated one star and fourteen spots lower than the Mizzou QB he outperformed two weeks ago, and he wasn't even offered by his own state's top SEC team.

This is why I said this year is his best chance, not his last chance. USC should be in the mix for as long as he is there.

The Cocks obviously have a good team, but Lattimore is probably headed to the NFL after this year and yall are gonna lose some guys from defense, too. Do you USCe fans think he'll be around another couple of years or will this be his last real shot at winning a SEC at South Carolina?

I didn't read all of the posts in this thread, so it might have already been written.

Spurrier told our incoming QB recruit, Connor Mitch, that he would be here for 4-5 more years if he came to USC. I don't have any reason to doubt him.

We went to the SECCG in '10, we swept the east in '11 (but dropped a crucial game to auburn), and we are currently are undefeated (3-0 against SEC teams), so we are making another run this year.

We've had slightly above average SEC recruiting classes the past several years, but we are getting high star players in areas of need. We may not get a 5 star OT/DE every year, but we got one during the timeframe. We've also had A LOT of success turning 3 star rated players into high-level producers (Norwood, Ingram, Shaw, Taylor, etc....) So we are doing well with what we have.

The jury is still out on Lattimore's return for a 4th season. I would imagine his NFL Draft advisory projection, family and stats from this season will impact whether he stays or goes early. If he has a late round projection, he will probably come back another year in hopes of improving that position. If he's still projected as a 1st round guy, he'll leave, IMO.

On defense, we will lose our Taylor (DE), Byron (DT), Wilson (LB), Bowens (LB), Holloman (Spur), and Swearinger (S). (So 6 starters.)
We lost Ingram, Robertson, Gilmore and Allen last year to the NFL, and many people said our defense would crumble, however we are still strong.

On offense we are only losing TJ Johnon (C), Cunningham (TE) and possibly Lattimore (RB).

We've recruited well to fill all of those positions. We have several DE's to choose from (Sutton, English etc...), a top 10 rated DT in Dukes. We have a ton of LB's here and some studs committed (including the #2 LB in the nation (Bryant). All American, J. Diggs at Spur, and a RS Soph Center, Harris. Gurley is a safety and filled in well for Swearinger against mizzou. We have a top 10 RB in Mike Davis, to fill in for Lattimore. Lastly, we have the deepest pool of talent in TE in the nation (Adams, Rainey, Anderson, Owens) who were all rated in the Top 15 for their position.

Next year, we'll be fine. It's like this year, we're just reloading.
