Gus's offense since 2010 at AU is based on zone read running attack setting up a play action passing attack with some wr screens and jet sweeps mixed in to attack the edges.

This scheme works against defenses where AUs o line can win the battle a large majority of the time or the AU running back can break initial tackles.

This scheme can also work with a dynamic runner at QB who can keep the linebackers and safeties honest (and slow) by pulling in the zone read.

I think it has become clear that Gus's scheme doesn't work against teams with a good front 7, a sound game plan, and good tackling unless he has that dynamic QB running threat. All he has to keep linebackers and safeties honest without the dynamic running QB, is the threat of the deep ball.

My theory is that mixing in many more intermediate passing routes over the middle will either be wide open or at least keep linebackers and safeties honest to help the run game succeed. It will also allow the QB to get rid of the ball on time and not risk the sack so frequently.

So far, Gus has stubbornly refused to use the middle of the field between 5 and 15 yards from the line of scrimmage in the passing game. Although we did see 4 such attempts last game (probably as many as I remember in a single game in a long time).

So, am I wrong? If so, why?

If I am right, is there any chance Gus adjusts his style/playcalling enough to utilize his accurate, but not dynamic running, QB?

Better question is since you are an Auburn Man in your opinion does Gus get fired if he loses to Georgia and Bama? Would make it 0 for his last 8 combined.

He should. I don't know if he will.

If Georgia beats Auburn it will be because they have a great defense and run game. Fromm doesn't have to throw it 20 times a game with a 70% completion percentage to win for Georgia. He just has to hit key passes at moments in the game that keep drives alive when they are behind the chains like Jalen did to LSU. Because from here on out Georgia will get the same treatment Bama gets load the box and make the QB beat you.

Yes, he better or he will get fired next year.

Who handles hiring/firing of football coaches at Auburn? Rich donors/board or AD? Jay Jacobs being a lame duck may make it interesting

The AD should, but there are always hands in it. We don't need to try and hire a new coach with a out going AD. I would prefer we set the table correctly and let the new AD handle it.

MsState has a better chance of beating Bama than Auburn does GA... It's not impossible but Georgia is by far the most talented team this year. They will win it all this year.

yes. he's not the offensive "genius" he wants to believe he is.

I don't know if he's too stubborn to beat UGA. I think AU has a really good chance in that game.

If he loses to UGA and Bama, moving his record to 0-8 against them in the last 4 years, AU should consider making a move. Not sure if they will or not depending on the new AD.

query: can stidham make the intermediate throws? here at lsu we don't make those throws because etling's arm isn't strong enough to zip them in, although now that I rethink, he cannot see the field clearly enough and check down.

just as stidham can't run, he may not be able to make those throws, therefore they aren't called.

auburn can win, but the coach has to be aggressive. you saw what Kirby did last week with the onside kick. even though unsuccessful, it sent a message to his team. we're here to win, and we're not stopping til it's over.

When it happened I didn't agree (but I'm just a fan so what the hell do I know and it ended up not hurting us since Kirby's trust in the D is well warranted) but man did I love Kirby's quote about it afterwards-

“Because it was there,” Smart said. “And I want to be aggressive at the University of Georgia and not be hunted. I want to hunt.”

We have a very small sample size, but it appears he can. He threw 3 perfect ones last week for 2 catches and a drop.

On his 4th intermediate attempt he either missed on the throw or had miscommunication with the receiver. The wr ran a dig and started to sit down on his route right as Stidham threw it. Either Stidham missed him or expected him to continue the route.

Stidham actually can run fairly well. He kept it on the zone read a few times against A&M and picked up some nice chunks of yards. I think he’s limited in running because Gus knows that like last year, if the 1st string QB goes down, we won’t have a chance.

The main problem with Auburn's offense is Gus needs a dual-threat QB like Cam Newton or Nick Marshall; Stidham is not a dual-threat quarterback.

I watched some of AU's Clemson and LSU games. That flaw was so easy to see. If Stidham is good at making those throws, it's amazing that they're still not a part of the gameplan. Making the DBs worry about defending short to intermediate passes will also help WRs beat DBs deep. It's not like rocket science. More like Football 101.

I think this is going to be a close game no matter what Gus does. I cannot figure how Auburn got so thoroughly dominated by the Clemson D. I thought Clemson was just in another league, but they are not.

Auburn will not be able to line up and run the ball down their throat, Stidham needs to have a big game passing to stretch the field to open up the running attack.
