Is Avery Johnson going to be a good recruiter for Bama basketball?

Just curious.

Yes. Alabama has the 12th best class right now for 2016.
Before he had coached a game, he had a commitment from Terrence Ferguson (McDonald's All American; 15th ranked player in the country).
He's winning without top talent right now. If he can somehow make the tournament this year, I don't see recruiting going down.

Probably as good as you can recruit at Bama. We aren't gonna get McDonald's AA's (I'd be surprised if we kept Ferguson)to come but he'll get pretty good players that can compete for the SEC tourney every great now and then. Maybe make the NCAA 3 out of 5 years. That's about all you can ask from our bball coach.

I hope so. We need the SEC to step it up in basketball. This would only help.

He's doing good so far. Everyone is excited about Terrance Ferguson, but Braxton Key looks like he is going to be a really solid player.

Would you like to know how I know you don't follow recruiting?

He has said nothing to lead anyone to believe he's on the verge of decommiting and has been openly supportive of Alabama athletics the last several months. Not sure why Johnson's successes this season would change that.

Ferguson is a all American so he can get them. Kids love Johnson and he has NBA appeal with great ties to AAU basketball. We won't get everyone on our big board but He will get enough talent to make a strong push in the tourney.

Still could add an interior guy like Bruno Fernando.

We've had numerous top recruits in the past and we will again under CAJ.

I think we end up getting a JUCO or Grad Transfer. There's also the Lazaro Rojas kid, but I'm not sure he has an acceptable offer.

I, admittedly, don't know anywhere near as much about the history of Alabama basketball as I do about Alabama football. AL.com had an article yesterday about Schea Cotton, which was an unknown story to me. Obviously there is surprise seeing how high McDyess was drafted #2.
Alabama has definitely had some down years but we have just as much history in Basketball as anyone (except UK and recent success of UF) and should be able to compete consistently with competent coaching/recruiting.

No it isn't.
I'll bet you're under 30 if you think that's all you can ask for a Bama basketball coach.
CM Newton made 2 NCAA and 4 NIT tournaments when the NCAA field was 32 teams and the NIT was only 24 (a total of 56 postseason bids). He also finished 3rd or better in the SEC in 8 of 12 seasons and won it 3 times.
Wimp Sanderson made the NCAA 10 times in 12 years (plus an NIT bid) and also finished 3rd or better in the conference in 8 of 12 seasons with 1 regular season and 5 tournament titles. He also lost 4 SEC title games - meaning Bama played for the SEC tourney title in 9 of his 12 seasons.
David Hobbs, who's entire career is so obscure he doesn't even have a Wikipedia page, made the post season all 4 seasons he was coach with 2 of them being NCAA bids.
When Gottfried still gave a shait, he made 5 straight NCAA appearances. Even considering that he mailed in his last couple of years, his teams still finished 3rd or better in the conference in 6 of his 10 full seasons and made the NCAAs in half of them.
The fact is that the 60% NCAA tournament mark that you claim to be "about all you can ask from our BBall coach" is historically the MINIMUM mark an Alabama basketball coach needs meet in order to keep their job.
A reasonable expectation for an Alabama basketball coach is much more than making the tournament 60% of the time. The realistic expectation should be in legitimate contention to make the tournament pretty much every season with the goal of making at least the sweet 16 on a regular basis.
Edited to add: It says a great deal about how much Anthony Grant (who I really liked) underachieved at Alabama when he couldn't reach David Hobbs' level of success.

Lol wtf. You are nuts if you think you should be AT LEAST making the Sweet 16 on a regular basis.

That's right. It is nuts. Why should I simply look at history and assume that a program which made the sweet 16 6 times in a 10 year span and made it 8 times in a 30 year span (all of which were after the tourney went to 64 teams) is an indication that it can be done again?
I mean, that has to be a fantasy right?

Well it sure is high delusion if that is the expectation. Arkansas once made the Final Four 3 times in about 6 years. It doesn't mean that that is my expectation for Arkansas basketball
