I know that they have been really good before, so please don't use that reason, this is not a thread about the history of Auburn, this is about the future.
My reasoning for asking this is based in some logic so please hear me out.
1. Cam Newton - they will more than likely lose him this year to the NFL. I can be a man and admit that he is one of the best college football players I have seen. He is a one-man army and might be one of the most impossible replacements. Meaning that Auburn might not ever get a guy like that in the near future.
2. Gus Malzahn - almost everyone knows that he is a head coaching job away from being gone. With all the rumors about either Petrino or Mullen taking the Florida job, you have to assume that Malzahn would be crazy not to take either of those teams vacant jobs. With him gone, I don't look for Auburn to replace him with someone of teh same calibur.
3. Camgate - I don't pretend to know how that will end, but if it ends badly, as in postseason bans and scholarship losses, this might put them back a long time.
4. O-Line - Auburn is losing 4 of 5 O-linemen this year. That right there is enough to put them back at least 2 years. But regardless, it is very hard to replace that many people, and remember that it is more than likely that they will also be losing Mr. All-American Cam Newton as well.
5. Revenge factor - it happens every year, but if you are on top, you get everyone's best game. With all the things I have just mentioned, this can't be a good thing.
I know this is long, but I really do wonder if all of the things I just mentioned might have the possibility of causing Auburn to not get back to this level of play for a long time. maybe I am just wishful thinking because I can't stand Auburn, but you have to wonder if all of these things will cause them to slip into a Miami slide into not being relevant. Your thoughts?

Auburn will really feel it when Cam leaves, however Cam will have enabled them to stabilize recruiting so they will be pretty good after these last couple of recruiting classes get on the field.

If the coaching stays in tact they could remain competitive for a few years at least, but losing Cam will definitely drop them back on an even playing field with the rest of the West.

Auburn will have a rough year next year no doubt. 2012 it all gets good again.

Next year is going to be a lot of growing pains, but it won't be a lot worse than 2009.

puntbamapunt, if you would have bothered to read the beginning, I said that this has nothing to do with the past, but the future. 2004 is considered by every single person as the past. Ross, I agree with you about next year. I think that the 2 big things that could hurt them are not finding a good replacement for when ya'll do lose Malzahn, and sadly, you will, and if anything is found to hurt Auburn in the whole cam thing.

AU has (almost) two undefeated seasons in 10 years..... odds are they'll do it again.

We should be pretty good in 2012, Trotter will be a senior and we should have a decent amount of talent and experience.

Nay!

UF experienced such strong Tebow hangover because Meyer refused to adapt the offense to Brantley's strenghts.

With or without Malzahn, we won't make that mistake.

Are we going to get arse raped next year? Most likely. Losing 24 seniors and 2 elite juniors to the draft, coupled with our schedule, is going to butt frick us big time.

Oh well. Just need to enjoy this year.

Eh...if the team were static I would agree.

However, teams are dynamic nowadays.

Staff turnover, injuries, early exits for the NFL, arrests, probation...a lot of things happen.

Most people looked at 2010 as 'the year' for Bama, but a lot of defensive NFL defections killed it.

One thing I will agree to is that AU will be better in 2012 than they will be in 2011.
