In 1961 (Jan 1962 game) the Rose Bowl agreement between big 10 and PAC 8 had expired. Alabama was undefeated and was already the AP and UPI consensus National Champion. Coach Bryant desperately wanted to be invited to the Rose Bowl especially given his history playing out there.
Segregation was an issue and he reportedly dressed two of the black locker room assistants in uniforms and had them stand behind him in the last game, a shellacking of Auburn, in hopes photos and TV would give integrated team impression.
Didn't work ... though the Rose Bowl strongly considered Alabama, and delayed and delayed making a decision, they opted for big 10 opponent and next year signed a new agreement between Pac and Big. Alabama went to win its Bowl game against and was already crowned NC before the Bowl.
So in other words USC looked for and found excuse to duck Alabama

interestingly enough it looks Alabama was the last the non Big 10 or Pac 10 team to go to the Rose Bowl in 1946
Oklahoma played Washington State in 2002

Fsu 2014 Season (CFP semi)
TCU 2010 Season
Texas 2005 season (BCS CG)
Texas 2004 season
-----
I've always hated how few match ups the SEC has had with the PAC.
Wish they'd re-do a variety of bowl tie ins to create opportunity for regular games.

The SEC chest pounding really doesn't have the same clout like it used to. It's basically been Alabama then the rest of the SEC. Alabama has carried the SEC lately and I absolutely hate having to admit this but I give credit where credit is due.

A couple of bad years does not erase a decade of dominance and thirty years of being the best conference. The SEC will rise again.

Your right about that but the last few years it's been all Bama and it doesn't look like the Bama machine is slowing down anytime soon. It really has been an impressive run to witness.

Because of the BCS, the Rose Bowl made changes. The year before marked the first time since 1947 that another conference team besides the Pac-10 vs the Big 10 teams.
The 2002 game served as the BCS championship game between the BCS No. 1–ranked Miami, then a member of the Big East Conference, and the BCS No. 2–ranked Nebraska, then a member of the Big 12 Conference. This prevented a West Coast team playing in the Rose Bowl for their first time, and it also marked the first matchup since 1946 not to feature the traditional pairing of Pac-10 vs. Big Ten teams.

I stand corrected then. In 2015 they have FSU and Oregon playoff game listed as the official Rose Bowl game. I guess that was the Rose Bowl that year making FSU and not Bama the last non Big 10 team to play in the official Rose Bowl. And Miami broke that in 2002 as you stated before. In 2016 Auburn played in the finals but that is not listed as the official Rose Bowl, the have Stanford and Iowa listed.

Georgia desperately wanted out of the Sugar Bowl for a shot at USCw in the Rose Bowl in January 2008. It would have been the 2 hottest teams at the end of the 2007 season.
Instead, the country got 2 craptastic games for the Rose and Sugar (UGA vs Hawaii sure did make for a great highlight reel, though)

true on New Year's day, but the sec was formed later that year so Tulane was not in the sec on game day.

The four major bowl games use to be Rose, Orange, Sugar and Cotton. I heard a trivia question years ago asking which colleges had played in all four. At the time, there were only a few. Alabama was one that had. I think Georgia Tech was also able to make the claim. Of course the Cotton Bowl was eventually replaced by the Fiesta Bowl as one of the prestigious Bowl games.

UGA has played in and won all 4.
