He went winless against Auburn. Thats unacceptable. He was far from a good coach.

If I saw Rich Rod, I would try to get him to sign my Nick Saban picture.
And then he'd probably get you to sign an article of Weight Watchers Club.

Shula is working at the highest level of football - the NFL.
Seems to me a certain coach couldn't hack it in the NFL and is now back in college.

I don't think Curley Hallman, Mike Shula, Bill Curry, Goff, D Dooley, et al were "horrible" coaches.
I think they tried their asses off. It does take the right players, staff, schedules, etc.
Now, some of their "decisions" may be looked at IN HINSIGHT as being "horrible." i.e. Hallman and OC Lynn Amedee's decision to have Jamie Howard continue throwing the ball early in the 4th quarter with a 23-9 lead at Auburn.

To be honest, I would just shake the hand of any former coach from Auburn.

It'd be an honor to meet almost any well-known coach not named Lane Kiffin.

I was on a flight to Birmingham while on TDY for the AF back in 2006 and Mike Shula sat right across the aisle from me. I had a Bama hat on and he asked me if I was a student. I told him that I wasn't, but that I was in the military and he shook my hand and thanked me for my service. That was the extent of that...

I saw Sylvester Croom in the Memphis airport right after he was hired by the Rams. I didn't say anything to him. I figured he just wanted to GTFO of that area right after being fired by State

When I was on active duty, I saw so many people that I thought would be cool to talk to in airports. I didn't want to interrupt any bit of normalcy they might have though. They already know everybody is gawking at them. I just let them be.

Say hi, and be respectful.

Zook sucked as UFs HC, but I at least respect his effort recruiting and I did meet him once when he became ILL's coach, and he was nice. No ill will towards him

I've met tons of CFB coaches over the years and most seemed pretty cool. Meyer was meh, but he wanted to GTF on the plane back to Columbus after a 1 point win in EL

Ditto for Arkansas, with the exception of Petrino (still too soon). I'd just steer clear of him.

I think fans -- and the sports media -- too often conflate coaches' win/loss records with their personal character, which is not only laughable but probably an inverse relationship. Like, the fact that Derek Dooley couldn't hack it at Tennessee doesn't mean he's a bad guy in real life, and Nick Saban's dominance at Alabama means nothing away from the field as far as his worth as a father or husband.

I always use Gerry Faust as a prime example of this -- he's usually regarded as one of the worst coaches in Notre Dame history, but by all accounts he's a fantastic guy in real life who continues speaks lovingly of Notre Dame and of his time there.

Although he wasn't necessarily a horrible coach. I ran into Jay Boulware on the sidelines of a high school game I was filming. I don't know much about him. I had on some Bama gear. He came up to me to tell me war eagle. I had no idea who the dude was that had OU gear on talking shite. He seemed like a nice dude. He was there recruiting our tight end.

I think a few UT fans, IIRC, had alluded to the fact that he wasn't exactly the friendliest guy, but I could be wrong. Although, I agree with your point.

LSU and Gerry Dinardo (although not as bad), usually are pretty good relationshipwise.

We liked Shula, but loved Dubose. Love to ask those two a few questions about Gump football.

I would follow him staying about 20 feet away and stare at him thru binoculars. I would let him notice me but when he looked my way I would duck and hide behind the closest obstacle

I think Curly Hallman would be pretty cool to drink a beer with. I bet he has some great stories.

We had a guy on my football team yell tiger bait to charlie weis when he visited a fellow teammate. That was fun when the whole team was doing laps shortly there after. I also ran into Kirk Herbstreit in 2008 while crossing the street to the Superdome and told him go Trojans since he was always on their cocks.
