Because both my grandpas wore cowboy hats, rode horses, and said "Howdy". I say "Howdy".

For at least four generations back on both sides of my family, my roots are in counties that are on the far western border of Arkansas.

We are a little more cowboy over here, and a little more like Texas than we are anything like Mississippi.

Western Arkansas is western. Eastern Arkansas is some drawlin, cotton growin, plantation having deep southerners.

I still consider it all to be "The South", though.

And I never ate grits, and we put sugar and butter in our rice and ate it for breakfast.

Oklahoma or Louisville. Both would be great upgrades. Nothing against the show me state but Missouri sticks out like a midget whore in church.

But if I was sticking to the slive's formula it would be Penn state

I'm still kind of lost in the whole "Texas isn't a southern state" thing. But oh well. Let's forget about the Confederacy, our dialect, our culture, etc. TAMU even has a statue of a Confederate hero in the middle of our campus who is considered the "father" of A&M.

But carry on. We Texans are just a bunch of yankees I guess.

Texas ain't Southern my brotha.

We're Texans which is the best thing you can be.

Baton Rouge, Shreveport, New Orleans, Mobile, Birmingham, Hattiesburg, Biloxi, Atlanta, Charleston, Myrtle Beach, Durham, are the cities in a quick list I have been to and spent some time in the borders of what I consider Dixie(the dark red area).

Outside of Tyler/Longview, I would consider Branson closer to "Dixie" than the rest of Texas. Dallas, Austin, Houston, San Antonio, etc are not "Dixie", imo. Yes, there are part in East Texas that are similar, but consider this; DFW... 7 million people... Houston metro... 7 million people... San Antonio/New Braunfels/Austin... 4 million people...

Yeah I get that we border the coon asses, and we were in the confederacy, but you have got 18 million in those combined areas alone have more people than all of Louisiana, Mississippi, Arkansas and Alabama... combined. No. We are not Dixie. We are Texas.

And I chose those four states, which represents the entire population of the SEC West, in perspective. Just to show how much unique and Lone Star culture we actually represent.

If saying SC is not southern then you are just being silly. In many regards more southern than GC states. Very much like Mississippi. Doesn't the confederate flag still fly at capital?

When the SEC expands to 16 teams, NC State and Virginia Tech or Virginia will be coming to the SEC.
UNC is rumored to be going to the Big 10

College Station, the Big Thicket, and a lot of the Piney Woods of East Texas have more in common with the south, except for the fascination with boots and beef BBQ, than El Paso or Lubbock, which are definitely not Southern.

I currently live in Central West Texas and not much here is remotely Southern either.

I TRULY have no problem with any SEC school....but I HATE Notre dame. If they were on fire I would not spit on them.

Texas is kind of like what the earlier poster said about Arkansas. We are where Dixie transitions to the west. The earliest Anglo settlers that came to Texas were Scotch/Irish from Tennessee, Kentucky, Mississippi, and Alabama. Then came the Germans and the Czechs, heavily after the Civil War. They all grew cotton.

Dallas is way different from Houston, and then Fort Worth and SA are even more different. Houston is our most "Southern" city and is somewhat like Atlanta.

I guess I consider the area east of I 45 defInately "the South", while the area east of I35 mostly Southern. The rest is more "western" I agree.

In South Texas, we are simply just Mexico.

But to say Texas culture is not Southern is false. The early settlers brought their culture with them and gave us our dialect and mannerisms. We may be Texas, but we are also Southern.
