I cannot see Alabama hiring a guy with no head coaching experience in Smart...even though he is in the system, knows the personnel and has apprenticed under Nick Saban. Derek Dooley also worked under Saban and we see how they worked out.

smart could be great but when you are at alabamas level i believe its best to go with good proven head coach. There really shouldn't be a limit to who bama could get in college football. we know 1. they are loaded with talent, 2. the pipe lines saban has built are sturdy for a while. 3. the school will pay as high as they can.

the only negative is the insane pressure of following saban but big time coaches come with big time egos.

going inside the family tree doesn't usually workout very well.

smart could be the exception
we're talking about a sample size of like 3 coaches AND completely ignoring Jimbo Fisher. Awesome

Serious question here: Has there ever been a long time asst coach that took over after a long time HC and been successful? I just can't think of any at this point. Seems like it never works out.

i didn't say inside the saban family tree. i meant going inside a schools family tree.

its a much bigger sample size with guys like bill steward, larry coker, mike shula

but by all means please hire dabo. it would come crashing down very soon if clemson promoted his oc.

Smart would be the odds on favorite, though I don't think it's automatic.

I wouldn't mind seeing us looking at Charlie Strong or Kevin Sumlin.

You could possibly argue Fulmer, but that situation was clearly different than this one.

Yeah that came to mind first and then Jimbo. Both are different situations though.

I would assume David Shaw, Jim Mora, Urban Meyer (yes, I said it), Charlie Strong, Kingsbury, Dabo, Helfrich and maybe even ol' Bobby Petrino's names would come across the ADs desk.

I could not see Dabo fitting in at Bama. I just don't see it

I had no idea.

The point is the same though, in fact it's even more reinforced by how elite bama is right now. They shouldn't "settle" on someone who's never been a head coach. They have the clout and the resources to go find the best, PROVEN head coach in America. There's simply no reason to promote the DC simply because he's already there and has worked under saban.

I would want Jimbo Fisher but Dabo Swinney can still have success once Chad Morris mors elsewhere I wouldnt say no to Dabo. They guy can recruit and at least keep talent coming to Bama. If there isnt a big name coach available dont be surprised if Kirby doesnt get promoted once Saban leaves. There have been plenty of assistants become successful HCs with no prior experience.

Meh. One could argue Kelly is the reason Oregon was successful in the 1st place. I'm talking big time programs. Solich @ Nebraska comes to mind. It would pretty much be of that magnitude.
