Not exactly. The NCAA did not pick a champion at all until l998 with the BCS. The NCAA deffered to the AP and UPI coaches polls which were considered the gold standard of polls in those days. They had Minnesota as #1 and Ole Miss as #2. Reading some of the history of the football polls back them, there were hundreds of publications back then that picked National Championships which had a lot to do with who read their magazines.

There are multiple ways you could have excluded us. We have national championships in tennis and track. They aren't team championships though so you would have had to put that in there as well.

If you include non-team ones, we're #1 ahead of Arkansas and LSU.

Alabama has tons of individual titles in track, field and gymnastics and some others I think.... but we never parade them around like the team titles. Which is a shame when you think about it, those guys and gals work hard. The college game has always been a team oriented league though.

We're talking about all NCAA titles in this thread. Not just Basketball and Baseball (Football doesn't have NCAA champions).
