Try using the NCAA's official site next time.
You're still wrong
NCAA recognized titles (football) and not the same as NCAA sanctioned.... ie actual NCAA titles.
polls and the BCS award the natty in football, since the NCAA does not award the trophy, they can only recognize it, but it will never be an D1 NCAA title.
EXAMPLE. Until 2013, the University of Alabama had 0 NCAA titles in Men's Athletics, but 15 claimed football titles, 13 of which are recognized by the NCAA

While the NCAA's website states that "the NCAA does not conduct a national championship in Division I-A football and is not involved in the selection process," it goes on to say that "a number of polling organizations provide a final ranking of Division I-A football teams at the end of each season." Ole Miss claims three national championships based on other polls.
I'm confused.

Not surprised though. You attended Alabama!

We were talking about NCAA recognized champions. Their site clearly states we have one. They weren't in the selection process at the time and still don't appoint who champions are in football today. That being said, on their site, they recognize us as champions. Same deal as the 2004 national title with LSU and USC.

easy, since the NCAA is not in charge of deciding the champion (bowls, polls and robot computers are) and there's no tournament (an NCAA requirement), the NCAA cannot award a champion to elite level football. An outside source must do so, basketball used to work on a similar system before the NIT or NCAA tourney.

Recognized is not the same as Sanctioned
Football titles are not NCAA titles, this is just common knowledge

But still, to say we have no national titles is just inaccurate.

The 1960 college football season marked the last time that the University of Minnesota was a national champion on the gridiron. Murray Warmath's Minnesota Gophers were not in the Top 20 in preseason polling, but received the AP Trophy at the end of the regular season. During the 20th century, the NCAA had no playoff for the college football teams that would later be described as "Division I-A." The NCAA did recognize a national champion based upon the final results of "wire service" (AP and UPI) polls.

Their site has them recognizing others from that season as well.

AP has Ole Miss ranked #2 in 1960 with Minnesota #1.

According to the above statement, the NCAA deferred to the AP and UPI polls to pick the national championship in college football. They AP and UPI picked Minnesota in 1960.

The FWAA and many other magazines have us at #1 and Minnesota at #2. The NCAA it appears is taking multiple publications into account outside of the AP.
