We are basically the same team as last year minus the Wr's and Bray and a slightly improved Defense. I think the defense will continue to improve and may actually be a decent unit next year.

You always have a place in the grind if you want to get off the vol-train for the season.

JD was not going to be very mobile with a bad knee. I think in part that is why he has been slower.

We had no idea Murphy was that slippery though. Even though he is probably slower than a healthy JD, he might be more effective we just don't know much about him get.

Hindsight is 20/20. Going in it seemed like a good idea to let Peterman show what he has, but other than the QB play the team played hard. They were just not as talented as UF.

I still can't fricking believe he got more than 2 series. The fact Butch gave him a whole half makes me realize that the best he'll ever do at Tennessee is 6-6. MAAAAAAAybe 7-5 if he is lucky.

I can't express how much I'm enjoying that your football team is pathetic and you have nothing but misery and despair to look forward to for years to come.

Dooley couldn't coach his way out of a paper bag and squandered a once in a lifetime QB and WR combo.

This team, doesn't suffer for lack of coaching, it suffers from a lack of experienced talent ALL over the field. We are playing 17-22 TRUE freshman. THAT is what Doolz who supposedly began reloading left us. What makes it worse is that a lot of those true freshmen as well as others backups and redshirts with little playing time coming in are playing skill positions -- positions no true freshman should be playing no matter how good. We also have zero depth -- worse than the constant depth whines Dooley would cry about.

We are where we are because of Kiffin and Dooley. If Dooley had simply been a poor coach who could recruit and leave some players around and some depth then we would not be in this position. But nope, he couldn't even manage that.

Jesus people. We don't have the horses right now to be a good offensive team. The OL is not going to open holes when we have WRs that can't get open and a QB who can't run or throw.

So you think the read option is a good offense for a QB who can neither run nor read?

And that it would be stupid to maybe switch to another offense that would at least provide the o-line (our only decent unit) a chance?

(As clarification, it's my opinion that the read option is only useful if you provide other options to force the defense to commit somewhere and go the opposite. If you are clearly going to run with the RB, then it's best to run out of another formation as the read option will be totally useless.)

Clearly Butch would like his personnel, but his inability to get away from the round hole, makes me question whether he (or most likely his staff) has the technical chops for this league.

edit: Also, I'm not on the fire Butch train. I'm on the, we have to give him three years regardless, but I'm highly doubtful he's going to win an SEC championship - train.

I think Butch was a terrible hire. Your AD knew you didn't have a running QB on the fricking roster. Should've gone after Chavis or given a coordinator a chance so you guys would at least be good on one side of the ball.

100% disagree. Butch was a very good hire. He's up against it now, but he will have his team winning sooner instead of later. He's a much better coach than idiot Vol fans deserve.

Chavis doesn't want to be a HC. He's never liked the recruiting aspect of it. And who can blame him? He gets paid well doing what he loves.

I agree with this completely. He's done absolutely nothing to indicate he's not a great coach. He inherited a depleted roster with a brutal schedule (2nd most brutal in the nation behind UK) but what talent we do have is not giving up. They don't quit, they show discipline, and show small improvement day by day. He's also killing it on the recruiting trail.

Fans were under the impression that a 'brand name' hire would be an instant fix because they don't understand the issues here. We could've hired Saban and he could do no better with this team. It takes time and we got screwed with Kiffin and Dooley both being destructive hires.

Clearly, it’s too early to pass judgment on Coach Jones, but he's also done absolutely nothing to indicate that he is a great coach.

Fair enough but what he has done is at least an A+ in recruiting, an A+ in establishing connections with Alum and supporters as well as high school coaches and an A+ in getting our players disciplined, and in a place where they don't quit. He's gotten a lot of it right. The winning should come when we have better depth and experienced talent (versus a whole bunch of very green talent).

Brian Kelly says hello.

Kelly left Jones a great QB in Collarros and Butch absolutely sucked his first year. I think his best year at Cincy was 9-4. not much to be excited about there IMO.

To date, his recruiting has exceeded even the most lofty of expectations.

Obviously, we'll need to revisit this topic in February.

I obviously don't follow UT as much as a UT fan but I covered the team in the past and have seen many of their teams in the last 25 years

Honestly, this is the weakest skill position UT team I've ever seen. Not disparaging any particular player(s) n/c I'm trying to just be honest. I don't think I've ever seen the talent level as low as it is. Long road ahead for y'all.

You're not being disparaging at all. What you're doing is telling the cold hard truth. The guy who got the pick-six in the Florida game was supposed to grayshirt this year (he's a walkon and last minute addition to the roster). We are playing 22 TRUE freshman, walkons, and several others with no prior experience. We are playing a QB with no experience, no experience at any of the WR positions, our slot had to go 4 deep for Oregon because they all got injured, even our TE has no experience. Now you put a QB in a situation like that -- no crutch player to throw to, receivers who are talented but still learning, and you're not going to have an instant passing game.

Without a passing game, a good team will be able to shut the running game down a force throws that are off due to inexperience at QB and in the receiving corps.

Butch is at least competent. The last two coaches are not. Still amazing that USC hired Kiffin.
