I think DeBoer is a really good coach but is this not a really surprising hire?

He’s got essentially 3.5 years of D1 head coaching experience

His resume is almost all with one QB, and that’s not to say Penix is the only reason DeBoer is successful, it just surprised me. I really would have thought Bama would go for a more established hire

There is no other Nick Saban out there

Other than somehow convincing DeMeco to leave Stroud what hire could they have made that would be better?

Exactly its a great hire for this moment. Time will tell if hes successful ultimately. Just like any other hire.

Nick Saban wasn't the GOAT when LSU or Alabama hired him either.. It's possible Kirby takes that crown some day. Maybe it is DeBoer. Maybe it is Lanning. Maybe it is Sark. Maybe it is someone else.

There is no way to know. It's also going to be quite hard to duplicate that success ever again with a 12 team playoff.

Saban had so much talent, all he had to do was win all but 1 game each year.. stroll into the playoffs, and win a couple of games.. Some years he won, some years he didn't.. but he was almost always there.. because of the talent gap he helped build.

With NIL, the Portal and a 12 team playoff.. it's gonna be a lot harder for everyone. Fumbles happen. Bad luck happens. It will even the playing field.

people would have made fun of them and bitched on any hire not named Nick Saban

Give the dude a chance. Ryans has been a coach 1 year. Norvell I'm not 100% sold on long term.

Harbaugh, Sark, Kirby, and Day weren't an option.

Plus, people need to realize, not everyone wants to replace the GOAT and be the guy after the guy.

Why not hire Ryan Day? Better recruiter, more established track record, similar results.

DeBoer has a higher ceiling than Day, at least perception wise because we’ve seen Day fall short multiple times now, but Deboer has a lower floor because these questions have to be answered:

-how will he manage Alabama’s monstrous boosters? He can’t dictate to them like Saban, and he also needs their NIL money more than Saban did

-the entirety of his P5 success is with a close to generational QB, winning a lot of one score games, with a terrible defense? Is that skill or luck? Is that repeatable?

-can he recruit at an acceptable level? How good of a coach does he have to be to make up the difference if Alabama suddenly is a top 8-10 talent team instead of top 1-2?

-how will DeBoer and his family adjust from being essentially anonymous people in the crowd to the most visible person in a whole state?

100% except they would have made fun of them hiring Nick Saban too.. everyone here (myself included) is a fricking idiot..

"Saban is too old!! He doesn't even care anymore!! Have y'all lost your fricking minds? He lost to Texas this year for crying out loud."

"Lanning couldn't even beat DeBoer, y'all should have hired him."

rinse and repeat for every single name out there..

That happened when Bama actually did hire Nick Saban

Fair. I just wasn’t expecting it to be someone so new. I’m definitely not making fun of the hire, as some itt have suggested

I admire your dedication.

Alabama just hired a coach that played for the national championship four days ago.

Bama had no other options, DaBore was as good as they could get.

Beyond being the GOAT, perhaps the best thing Saban did was get this situation under control. Obviously the new guy doesn't walk in with the clout Saban had to just tell folks to frick off, but the blueprint is there and the hope is Saban can/will offer up advice on that one. He doesn’t want to see his machine run into the ditch.
