Legendary Dallas Cowboys coach Tom Landry almost attended Mississippi State.
Landry attended the University of Texas at Austin as an industrial engineering major. Landry had given thought to enrolling at Mississippi State University, where his friend John Tripson was an All-American, but did not want to be far away from his friends and family in Texas. The main driving force in keeping him from enrolling at Mississippi State University was the notion that it would be too long a travel for his parents to see him play college football.[5]

Peyton Manning almost attended LSU.
But our coaches liked Josh Booty more.
Booty committed then chose baseball after being drafted.
Came back after failing in the minors.

I chose/passed on some that I later regretted in my earlier recruiting days, too.

Tom Landry may be the most influential mind in NFL history. Created the 4-3 defense which is the basis for modern 4 DLinemen sets. Developed the shotgun and motion-based offenses on which the college and pro games are using today.

I almost attended UCLA. Wooden thought one red head on the squad was enough.

I wonder why he didn’t consider aggy?

Whoa! Had never heard this. That would have been a big historical rewrite.

John David Crow enrolled at LSU, but Bear Bryant stole him away to aTm where he won the Heisman Trophy.

I think we all know the answer to that.

You know this place is toxic when we have the semantics police out here on a sports message board in response to a genuinely cool fact.

I don't think this is accurate.
Manning stated he regretted never getting to play a game in Tiger Stadium...with Tennessee. He never said he had any interest in playing for LSU.

That and State ran out of trailers aka dorms rooms.

Not everything Tom tried worked ... but make no mistake, that man was an innovator.
The Flex Defense was also a Tom Landry thing ... which I think should most definitely be tried today. Of course, he also was firmly in belief that he could run a two QB system. That wasn't so good. Neither was shuttling in plays using the OG.

When Lane Kiffin got to UT he told Taj Boyd, a long time Tennessee commit, to look elsewhere.
He went to Clemson and set school yardage and TD records that still stand..

Most Tide fans almost attended the University of Alabama, but soon after realized part of being a true Tide fan is having never set foot on campus..
