Don't necessarily hate the school, just can't stand a lot of their fans. Unless you grew up in Mississippi you wouldn't quite understand, either. Some of the worst people I've ever known and that includes a relative or two. All they do is bullshite all the time about this and that, ex: "I have a house in the French Riviera" and "my dad banged Miss America when he was at Ole Miss".."my dad is getting a Gulfstream G-650..lol "I had a threesome with 2 LSU Chi O's on the balcony of my condo in Destin last wknd.. blah blah. I've heard this type of bullshite all my adult life and when you get a bunch of old gray haired OM lounge lizards bunched together, it will really make you want to hurl!

You mean to tell me this isn't standard conversation in most colleges? Lol State poor.

Don't really have a problem with Ole Miss or State fans. In fact, most people I've known or met from either school have been really cool. Both fanbases do have some kind of weird complex when it comes to Alabama (the state). I see fans of both schools constantly complaining about things in Alabama or making fun of Alabama when I frankly don't understand why you guys even care enough about a state you don't live in to get so offended. The comment about bringing up racism in the state of Alabama is a perfect example. It's as if the OP thinks all racial problems have been solved in Mississippi and brings Alabama into the conversation about Ole Miss for some weird reason. I guess it annoys Mississippians that even with all of Alabama's problems (and there are plenty) it STILL ranks ahead of Mississippi in practically every quality of life measure. I guess it would suck to always be ranked last and never have another state to look down upon.

P.S. Speaking of racism, I saw a recent statistic where Alabama and Mississippi were ranked #1 and #2 respectively for the LEAST number of hate crimes.

I guess my reason for "not liking" Ole Miss was a learned experience living in Olive Branch and having some close friends that were Miss St fans.

Oh, and I seldom use the word HATE and save it for things that are really meaningful.

Florida should but they keep underestimating us and we keep beating them.

Cheeseburgers in Mississippi pretty much suck. Almost every option is a fast food chain (and they are shitty ones like Wendys, not InNOut), or they have overpriced "gourmet" burgers at restaurants with COMPLETELY unspecial beef or buns. The best burger I have eaten there meat quality wise is Back Yard Burger, which has angus that is still two or three steps below my "backup" burger place here in Austin (and their fries are TERRIBLE). If you want to step it up past angus (like some real grass fed, organic, non-hormone injected locally sourced beef) then you are screwed in the state of Mississippi. The closest thing to a decent "burger" place in the entire state is Ward's, and that is because of the root beer not the chilli burgers. I am a huge burger fan but everytime I go there to visit I basically live on Popeyes because I can't stand what passes for a "burger" in that state.

You seem legitimately upset at this fact. You're in Austin, what is your opinion of Hopdoddy's?

Have been to all three, multiple times.
LL last week, actually, to watch the World Cup at the bar.
The brisket was extremely mediocre, overcooked/dry, and flavorless.
The "slaw" atop the meat consisted of a few sliced red onions and some Italian parsley.

I've learned that many of the folks in Mississippi think the food in Oxford is off-the-scale, simply because their basis for comparison is so abysmal. Good for them! I'm genuinely glad they enjoy it.
Not at all my thing.

Yeah, sure. You don't want to get into a pissing contest over food. Texas has some of the shittiest food I've ever eaten other than Belarus.

brisket

Where did I say brisket? The pulled pork I'd actually good minus the Carolina style sauce.

The burgers and fries are what it's known for.

Pro tip: Nobody outside of Texas gives brisket the time of day

Cooper Manning went to Ole Miss, as did Olivia Manning, so I think it's fair to say "The Mannings" are an Ole Miss family with Peyton being an exception.

There is definitely a certain class of people there who are complete snobs yet are oblivious to what it really means to be at the level they consider themselves to be. It is understandable, I guess, that an area where all incomes are lower would result in the higher end of that lower income area thinking they are the Vanderbilts.

Personally, I think a person who defines himself by his tax return is rather sad. But to do that and believe that driving a Lexus and drinking Johnny Walker makes you elite...that's REALLY sad.

I wasn't looking to get into a pissing contest.
To each his own.
I passed on the burger last week, b/c I'd done it previously there, and wasn't big on the fried egg they put on it.
So I asked the bartender, the bar patrons, and my waitress what the best thing was on the menu--to a man, I got, "You HAVE to have the brisket plate and Mississippi caviar. It's amazing"
I did.
And it wasn't.

Nothing personal at all.

Get the econco burger.

Not to mention, every Texan I knew while in Oxford would order brisket and a shiner at every restaurant that served it. Hell, one got pissy because Ajax was out of shiner.

It wouldn't have been my first choice.
But my habit at most restaurants is to ask the regulars, the staff, and the chef what I should order.
Again, they all claimed the brisket plate was--by far--the best thing on the menu.
I had a Woodford Reserve with 3 cubes of ice.
Not a Shiner fan.
