SO, let's assume the rumor of Richt talking to A&M is true. (just a hypothetical, I'm not saying it's even remotely true, so settle down and don't go threatening suicide WG Dawg.)

If you're UGA, do you just give him the extension he's obviously playing you for? I mean, before this season, he was awful and you wanted him gone since he shite the bed with a good team in 08 and has just plain been mediocre-bad 09-10. If you lock him in with the extension and he proves to be mediocre again, you're stuck with him for a while due to a huge buyout.

Or, do you call his bluff and make him earn his extension with an SEC East championship or BCS bowl next year? That should be the standard considering UGA's competition in the east next year. THen, give him the extension if he's earned it. If he loses 4-5 games next year, then you can cut him loose.

I am leaning towards the latter. If UGA calls his bluff, I still don't think Richt leaves a much more talented team with a huge class of talent in 2013 in the state of GA, for TX A&M, a rebuilding job and having to face the West every year.

If he does leave, then UGA is in a bit of a bind, but I have no doubt there will be a long line of highly qualified coaches wanting in.

Hearing there are some legs to this story with Kirby Smart the likely replacement should Richt jump ship.

24/7 reported not too long ago to expect Sumlin to be the guy.

However, back on topic. UGA should look for other coaches with HC experience like Petersen or Patterson before going with Muschamp, Jr.

Honestly, I say call his bluff.

Give him a one year deal. If its not good enough. Give the Head Coaching job to Grantham

I don't understand why ya'll want him gone. With his track record you should be begging him to stay. He has been a consistent winner. A couple of rough seasons mixed in with ten/eleven win seasons is nothing to sneeze at. But you are willing to replace him with an unknown? Don't get it.

Not sure if serious????

Why do UGA fans not like the idea of Smart? I think he would be a good HC.

They're going to extend him, because they can't send him out recruiting with limited time left on his contract. And adding 1 year is laughable and a bad sign in itself.

It's really not even debatable, he's already forced an extension.

Richt is going to get an extension. He earned it this year.

The texas A&M people who are reporting he's interviewed and toured their facility are delusional. He may have talked with someone about the job in order to help in his UGA negotiations. But he isnt moving.

His whole family lives in Athens. He has three kids in school, one about to graduate HS, a wife who just started nursing school. He told Keith Marshall he would be here. He WOULD NOT lie to a recruit just to get his signature. And he's on deck to possibly win the East again next year. Why in the world would he go to probably the second to last place team in the SEC West?

Smart is just the guy on the sideline, everyone knows that's Saban's defense.

Grantham actually runs every aspect of the D at Georgia.

If UGA denied his extension, it wouldn't be unheard of for him to move.

Honestly, I have no idea why AD's over react and change contracts based on one year. It's different when it is in their initial contract (i.e., Saban being paid $.01 more than the highest paid coach if he wins a NC). They should cover all of these stipulations in the initial contract and then work on a new contract when that one runs out. Giving an extension every year or after winning a division only puts the teams in a bind when they try to cut ties with the coach.

Heck, I'm sure Richt got a bonus for winning the East and going to the SECCG. He'll get another for his bowl game. They've already agreed in a contract what the reward for such an accomplishment should be. If he wanted an extension for winning the East, he should have gotten that in his contract initially.

I am the athletic director. UGA just doesn't ask for my opinion. Fortunately Moustache has.

Richt gets his extension thru atleast 2016. Not for Saban/Miles/Stoops type money obviously. Buy out will be extremely low, however. Grantham will get his as well. All this done around bowl season.
