Personally, I recognize Bama as having 8 National Championships. Champions before 1943 are all suspect at best with 4-5 teams claiming to be champions every year before 1943. Claiming national titles even though you lost your bowl game is stupid. Bama still has more legit titles than anyone else regardless.

So because Alabama claims 2 or 3 dubious titles Auburn's gotta claim 6 or 7 of them?
The whole thing reeks of desperation and little brother syndrome.
Particularly in that even with all those additional claims AU would still be way behind Bama, so what's the point?
At least by only claiming 100% legit titles Auburn can take the moral high ground. What's left if you claim a bunch of bogus ones and are still behind Bama by double digits?
And as others have pointed out, if you wanna use the most liberal criteria possible, Alabama can claim 19.

I really don't care how you count them as long as you apply the same fair criteria to other teams. I've seen these discussions on Alabama's claims going to "well this and this and this title should be cut" while not noting that other teams' claims are going down as well so relatively nothing much has changed. Strange claims are everywhere.

Alabama fans boast about having 15 (except the ones that know that that number is wrong) and down Auburn for only having 2, when, in reality, Alabama is claiming National Championships that they have no business claiming. And, yes, if the two teams are put on the same ground and have the same standards, Alabama still has more. That's not the point, though.

You do realize bama added a bunch of "claimed" NC's right after bear died, don't you? That was in 1983. This is why you "claim" them....
