5. I'm gonna count 2001 because we won the SEC championship and as long as an SEC champ isn't like 8-5 they should have a spot in the playoff. Besides that, 2003, 2006, 2007,and 2011

dude...

Fine, Jesus. So it's 4. Didn't think y'all would get so damn rustled. I was just using Bama math.

No way the committee would have taken bama in 2011. No way in hell.

ETA: Wouldn't have taken bama last year either.

In fairness not every team in the final 4 of the BCS would have been picked by the committee automatically, they're going to lean towards 4 teams from different conferences if that's reasonable and feasible.

Alabama almost certainly wouldn't have made it in 08 or 13.

I don't think they would have made it in 08 since Florida proved they were definitely the better team.

13 it might have happened though, hard to say. I think FSU, AU, and Michigan State would have been locks and the debate would have been between Stanford and Alabama.

But yeah, more often the committee is going to shy away from 2 teams from the same conference unless the chips fall a particular way.

1 (1998)

We were the conference champion even though Kansas State was #3.

Ohio State - 6 appearances, (98', 02', 05', 06', 07', 12')

2002 for sure.

Possible in 2005, 2012, and 2007, in order of likelihood based on my interpretation of the criteria.

Damn, I never realized how few decent teams there were that season. The fact that a thoroughly mediocre Bama squad that had lost to LA Tech at home and struggled against a largely untalented AU team in the IB was still the #4 team in the nation shows how piss-poor CFB was outside of FSU and VPI (and possibly Nebraska).

You may not have made the playoff in 2011 actually

Alabama whipped us twice that year.
