Did we really make any half serious inquiries to VT last year. I heard very little about them

Not really, the VT (and NCST) talk was mainly on TD about who would be a good #14 to pair with A&M (and would we go to 16 with NCST and maybe WVU as well).

SEC and ACC seem to have an alliance whereby neither will poach the other. With the "block bloc" of Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina we can safely rule out FSU, GT, Clemson, and Miami coming in to the SEC (and who really wants Miami at this point anyway). And none of the ACC members from Maryland north are realistic SEC targets in any scenario.

The only "prime targets" are the Virginia and North Carolina schools. Using the Big 12 as an analogy: UVA and UNC are somewhat like Texas (consider the SEC "beneath them"), Wake is like Baylor (a Baptist school with delusions of mediocrity--actually worse since Baylor actually competes in women's sports), Duke is like Kansas (great basketball add but horrible everywhere else) and VT and NCST are like K-State (decent programs that don't threaten the major players).

MD may not be that bad of an option. Its no further north than Mizzou or UK, and its closer to the DC market than VT is. It also adds a little bit to basketball(not sure about their other sports). UVA may be more willing than your giving them credit for. Although I think most of that comes from wanting to get a leg up on VT again. They want to be in a better conference than them.
I guess the main thing is I just don't want VT. They are a poor fan base. Almost all ONLY care about football. Hell most call themselves Duke or UNC fans during basketball season. We also already have enough delusional fans in the SEC. Talking to them, they would try and make you believe they have the history of Bama, when in actuality it's closer to Ole Miss
Niether fell out of my chair when I had one tell me the were the winningest CFB team, even ahead of Bama and LSU.
Sorry, I just hate VT

Which for them they would get in the B1G. Remember also that outside of Nebraska all the B1G schools are AAU members (means nothing in athletics but university presidents care a whole lot about it) and UVA (as well as UNC, MD, and Duke, plus GT) are all members.

Outside of Kentucky (and Florida in good years) that describes the vast majority of the SEC universe.

Actually closer to Auburn. If any school has a history close to Ole Miss it's Baylor.
