Some people are under the delusion that you can win with elite talent alone. Even great players need coaching. Mike Dubose had a roster full of 4 and 5 star players in 2000. Went 3-8. Recruiting is one aspect, but only part of the equation. Gotta be able to coach players and manage egos.

You realize Self and Roy basically had the same amount of talent in the same time span?

Oh really? How many lottery players has Cal had at Kentucky? How many has North Carolina had in that time? You are kidding yourself if you think they've had the same amount since Cal has been at Kentucky. I do know when Roy had real talent he won two titles, which is better than Cal.

ETA: Cal has had 13 lottery picks at Kentucky, Roy has had 3 during that time. Kentucky has had 24 players drafted, Roy has had 8. Yeah, they've had about equal talent lol.

Isn't that the point? Kentucky has had great talent, better than anyone else, but they haven't had the great coach to go with it. Cal is a very good coach, but he isn't a great coach. He has every possible advantage at Kentucky, much like Saban does at Alabama, but he always seems to find a way to come up short even with a roster full of NBA players.

I know he doesn't win national titles every year, but some of you are making it sound like he loses 10+ games a year and constantly squeezes Kentucky into the dance as a 2 digit seed on the bubble.

I said he was a very good coach, but he isn't a great coach. He is the best recruiter though for sure.
