How attached are you to your team's former players when they go to the NFL?

Seeing the Marcel Dareus thread got me thinking about this. I have very little emotion about players once they go pro. I do want them to succeed, because I have been following them for several years and it is good for the program. But when it comes to an individual player doing great or being a bust, it's not something that affects me very much.

That being said, I remember growing up how much I loved Joe Namath, and to a lesser extent Stabler, and not because of what they did at Bama. I always loved Derrick Thomas. I wonder if it becomes a different story for me if a former Bama player becomes a legend at his position, or is in a very high profile position like QB. Maybe part of that is because I followed the NFL more as a child, and now I don't care about any of the pro sports.

Do you feel similarly? Or are you highly emotionally attached to "your" guys in the league?

I would hope this is the general thought

If someone like Cam Newton had played at my school, I think I would have to start rooting for Carolina

I'm only attached to the ones that become all pro HoFers. The rest are dead to me.

I can see people from states that don't have pro sports teams getting attached to former college athletes in the pros.

I definetely root for them. My main guy is Jarvis Landry though. He's my favorite LSU player of all time and I'm so glad his game translated to the NFL. I figured it would but it's nice to see him succeeding. Patrick Peterson and Tyrann Mathieu being the elite of the elite at their position is nice too. If there was a star player at LSU that went in the first round that was a complete bust I'm sure it would bother me a little bit.

I always pull for Gamecocks in the NFL. Alshon for sure, and Ellington, Davis, and Shaw. Unfortunately Lattimore couldn't make it but somehow a lot of Gamecocks have ended up on the same few teams recently.

49ers - Davis, Ellington, Anderson
Texans - Joseph, Clowney, Allen
Bears - Shaw, Jeffrey
Rams - Cooper, Thompson
Falcons - DiMarco, Wilds

I think it depends on the caliber of player. Like someone said above, if Cam had gone to LSU I would be a huge Carolina fan. Hard to not be a fan of the Cards right now with Peterson and Mathieu doing so well there

Yeah, imagine if that happened

The better question is how do you perceive rival players in the NFL? What if they're stars for your favorite team?

At the very least I am more willing, but still begrudgingly, able to accept how good Hopkins is as a Texan way more than I ever was while he was at Clemson.

Jamarcus is obvious. Berkavious Mingo also comes to mind.

In the same vein, as a Falcons fan, it is hard to accept that I want Vic Beasley Jr. to do well haha

Being a Ravens fan, I'm obviously more invested in the Bama players that go there. I keep up with most Bama players just because I really like the NFL, but I don't consider myself emotionally invested. I do enjoy watching them succeed, both on and off the field.

I follow them as in, if I have my choice of NFL games, all things being equal, I'll watch the one that the Auburn player is playing in. But really, I follow and root for other SEC players the same way..was really happy to see Dak Prescott kick so much arse the other day. Big fan of Amari Cooper...but that doesn't include doucehnozzles like Tat McAssblaster

I like Ingram as a Saints fan. I just want to see more out of him.

I didn't think Mingo should have been drafted that high anyways. When it happened I knew he wasn't gonna be able to live up to his pick.

I'm a Saints fan first, Tiger second. As long as they aren't beating the saints, I pull for NFL tigers. I don't let emotion get to me when it comes to my FFB team, but I am drafting Juice Landry, he's doing big things this season.
