Based on what? Why wouldn't the standard amount of allowed contact been sufficient to do these things?

Seriously? What exactly do you think the NCAA intends the extra contact to be used for? Why does it become a violation if, and only if, the recruit doesn't enroll with the school?

Common sense bro. Use it.

It's not really the ruling I'm concerned about, but the NCAA's consistency. Florida didn't so much as a slap on the wrist and LSU gets sanctions for this??

It's a dumb rule, but a rule nonetheless. LSU knew the risk, accepted it and got burned. Maybe they will be more careful in the future.

I honestly can see Harbaugh and Meyer using recruits as pawns to meddle with each other. If schools start attempting to use this as an advantage, imagine what that could do to college football. It needs to be changed, yyou're trying to close the deal. If a kid signs a FAA, you dont have a reason to think that they're not gonna sign a LOI and enroll. Not if you're a good recruiter.

Y'all are getting hit with the "Josh Malone Rule." Back when we recruited Malone was the first year for FAA's. Josh signed papers with us and Clemson and for some reason Clemson chose to announce that they had an FAA. This brought a lot of attention to the issue and people started wondering what would happen when Malone chose a school. Long story short, Malone signed with Tennessee and nothing happened to Clemson but the FAA rule was sent to be reviewed to prevent kids from signing multiple FAAs. An FAA means a school can have as much contact as they want (normal recruiting rules don't apply) but they are bound to honor the scholarship no matter what happens. The NCAA clarified that yes, even if you lose you still have to honor that scholarship because you gave it away with the FAA - again it's to prevent a kid signing FAAs with 5-6 schools and subverting the recruiting rules.

It punishes schools that lose out but it's meant to prevent FAAs from becoming common. They're really only meant for special cases like with Malone who was an in-state kid likely going to an in-state school.

The kid acted within the rules. The LSU staff chose to take advantage of the rule of unlimited contact with the knowledge that the recruit was not firmly committed to attending LSU.

I think neither one can be given a pass from responsibility. Continuing to just brush it aside as a dumb rule won't make the sanctions disappear.

If the rule wasn't in place then staffs would ask several to sign FAA papers to gain unlimited access. Either the rule to allow signing an FAA has to be fixed or this one stays in effect and teams take their chances.

One more thing. If this is the penalty for one offense and self reporting, what will it be when three kids bail and another school turns you in?

When the enforcement of rules is arbitrary and exceeds the offense (there is no victim here) you only encourage cheating.

And of course, now there is a nifty way to set up other schools. Which helps nobody.

What do YOU think the extra contact is intended to be used for? Seriously, answer that one question.
