There are zero schools in the SEC that aren’t stepping stones for coordinators.

This is a case where it’s obviously not about the money.

But it could be. I'm not talking about matching. I'm talking about betting the house. Millions are a pittance when talking about elevating a program.

Ill advised? Maybe. But do we just hang around and wait until someone snatches Kirby, then Drink if he continues to succeed? I realize Saban has assistants hired away like clockwork, but he has other high-talent assistants salivating to join his staff. Pretty sure we're not there yet.

At the end of the day, I have no idea if Baker is that good or if Moore is that good, or if Drink is that good, but at some point, you need to take a gamble. Sometimes maybe an outrageous gamble.

There are so many variables ... If a coach is truly on the fence about where to leave, a counteroffer might persuade him to stay. And some coaches look for offers for the sole reason of getting a raise from their present employers. But coaches don't always leave for financial reasons. It could be the attraction of going home or, at least, to the pat of the country where he feels most at home. It could be because of a promotion, or the chance to move to a more prestigious program. Or perhaps he has connections to one or more of the coaches at the new school. In those cases, a counteroffer probably wouldn't carry much weight. And who wants to talk someone into staying if they truly want to leave for whatever reason.

Are you asking why Mizzou shouldn't offer an outrageous price to keep him?

Because Drinkwitz and your AD are good at their jobs, and presumably already have a shortlist of potential and realistic replacemen

Hope you are right and perhaps I'm just overreacting, but this is seriously impacting my 2023 high!

I hear you on this. Frankly, more than a few of the people we acted to keep at my company eventually left anyway (but we did retain them at the time we felt was critical).

Yeah....I don't think going crazy on a coordinator is wise.

LSU might have been able to keep Dave Aranda in 2020 if we paid him $5 million, but why? If everybody in the program knows that we're paying you to prop up the HC, why shouldn't you be the HC?

Maybe Drinkwitz is worth a long term financial commitment, but that's gonna take an AD with balls and an ability to engage the booster base.

What makes sense in your own life experience doesn't relate.

P5 coaches aren't like us and they don't have expectations like us. In most cases, they'll change jobs every 2 years anyway. Either they suck and get fired, or they're really good and they get offers.

I certainly can not dispute this based on the reality of CFB, but as other posters (mainly trollers) have pointed out, it appears relatively easy to poach talent from MU. Couldn't we at least strive to make it a bit harder?

Making a 2nd year DC the highest paid coordinator in the country and whose wife is from the area he’s being hired to is the opposite of “relatively easy.”

The fact that LSU would be trying to poach a Mizzou coordinator and we offered close to $2M to counter would have been unthinkable two or three years ago.

Progress no doubt. Just getting old and want to glimpse the promised land before I turn it over completely to my other True Son.

The real promised land is the friends we meet along the way.

I had a blast getting lit (I didn’t realize they don’t care if you bring in your own alcohol) with 10 friends in the 300 section this year for the Florida game with all the free hotdogs you can eat. And a fourth and forever conversion to keep a great season alive.

I won’t forget watching Henry Josey break through the line against A&M to seal the win that sent us to Atlanta in our second year in the league. That’s the last game my pops was able to physically attend with me. Mobility isn’t as good for him anymore.

Just enjoy the ride. It’s plenty of fun if you do it right.

It seems like 5 star players and great coaches leave LSU every couple of years.

That's a sign of success.

I personally thought Baker would hold some animosity due to Kelly not retaining him in 2021 but apparently he didn't.

Kelly has never had an issue hiring former coaches. Denbrock was another coach that left Notre Dame to be Cincinnati’s OC because Kelly wouldn’t promote him and he followed him here from Cincinnati.

Good advice!

After the Cotton Bowl I saw on my son’s Twitter feed a picture of us at the game with a caption expressing how good it was to enjoy it with me.

Believe me, I screen shotted the post!

That’s awesome, man. A memory to cherish and on top of that, evidence of your son’s shared sentiment.

When assistants and/or head coaches are recruited to other programs do they typically give their existing employer the opportunity to match or exceed?

Having been in business all my life and an owner and decision-maker in this latter part of it, if we were set to lose talent we would evaluate our needs on an unemotional as possible basis and act accordingly. We pulled some back from the brink and others we shook their hand on the way out the door.

Looking for information or even informed speculation out of curiosity. Please don't answer with childish bashes to Mizzou. Use the other 50+ Mizzou bash threads to do that.

Dude wanted to coach for LSU, he got a few extra bucks, his wife is happy, this kinda shite happens every year, it's part of big time college football.

Now Drink needs to prove he can convince a capable DC to step in and keep the program moving forward.
