On college gameday, before the LSU/Bama game awhile back, Saban said that he hardly if ever messes with playcalling during a game because it's disruptive. I found that interesting, and not just because Miles apparently does the opposite: If you totally leave it to your coordinators, what exactly is the head coach's role during a game on a play by play basis?

One time when he was D-coordinator at the Browns he called a third down blitz, Belichick overruled him, and they allowed a touchdown and got beat. That's why he doesn't mess with his coordinators. Seriously.

Hugh Freeze is moving toward this. Its not like the coach isn't listening to everything on the headset. Occasionally they will overrule stuff and tweak the overall strategy but the hc nitpicking every play and changing a lot is disruptive. Freeze had some crazy deal where the OC would call first and second down and he would call third. Did not work well. Let you OC and offense get in a rhythm.

Practice is for the coaches, games are for the players. Be managers and make decisions based on putting your team in the best position to be successful.

If those 2 couldn't get the Browns to a Super Bowl, no one will.

Play by play? Not much unless it is to over-rule or make a suggestion in a key situation (3rd & long, 4th & going for it, etc).

HC's usually are coaching the assistants during the game. Suggesting adjustments to strategy, informing them of goals on given situations, making personnel decisions. Between possessions, the HC will communicate to the Offense or Defense in terms of good/bad from previous drive and make suggestions.

HC will make almost all calls on whether or not to go for it on 4th down, when to call timeouts, when to use surprise/trick plays that may have been practiced.
