Arkansas doesn't have the money to pay for his buyout plus attract a good coach.
I don't know what we'd do if we didn't have someone from assTomouth university telling us the state of our program.

If we're going to wait until Dec 1 to fire him, then we'll damn sure go ahead wait until Jan 1 to save 3 mil. If he's going to get a knee-jerk firing, it'll be after a terrible game mid season, so like, real soon. If we fire him Dec 1st, whoever makes that decision needs let go as well for burning 3 mil.
Long needs to be on the coach hunt right now, get it all but official, then cross the I's and dot the T's on Jan 2nd and make it a fire/new hire combo press conference.
I think that'd be ideal. Hopefully the season doesn't continue to crater and force Long to make an early move. Something about knee-jerk firings and interim coaches just leaves a bad LSU vibe with the program. Looks like that may be where we're headed though.

Guess you haven't heard of Walmart, Tyson, JB Hunt or Jerry Jones?? We may not have top recruits in our state but believe me there is plenty of money.

National signing day is February 7th. If you guys wait until January to fire him you will completely frick up the 2018 recruiting class. Losing 1 whole recruiting class will set you back 2 seasons alone on top of bringing in a new coach and system.

Might as well go ahead and write off that 2018 class as fricked. With no one to step in and pick up the pieces until coaches are done with their current responsibilities, recruiting is going to get trucked regardless. Agreed, earlier the better, but that's a lot of money to burn for 30 days.

Perhaps, however it is a small class to begin with. Either way we will be set back a bit and then we will pick up like everyone else.

We have a few things that we are lacking in Arkansas... Thank God that Money and Female Cheerleaders isn't one of them...

The buyout is going to be negotiated down. Bret wants out of here now too. He's lost the fan base along with the team. He's not happy and is taking tremendous heat. It's not fun for him to go out in public anymore. He knows it's over. A few million dollars will lessen the pain.

Yea that makes sense and sounds good from every perspective but the "give up millions of dollars" on Bert's side. It'd be great if it happened but why would Bert even consider that? To extinguish his flaming arse from the hot seat? I'd like to think I could handle quite a bit of heat if I was getting retirement money every year.
I suppose dropping it to allow him to take another job would make sense, but he'd really have to want out, and it'd be crazy if his next gig was more lucrative than what he'd make staying here.

Wait for them to sign and then fire him.

He's still going to get more money than most people will ever see in several life times. Getting himself and wife and child out of a toxic environment will be worth taking a little less money. Plus he will get another job. Maybe not a power 5 job but he'll get one. Maybe even a commentator gig.

we will probably negotiate a lowered lump sum buyout to just leave.
What leverage does Arkansas have to negotiate a lower buyout? What a pipedream.

We may not this season. But we'll be back in a couple of years. Hopefully you'll still have your coach then.

2018 class will be pretty rough if you wait that long. is it worth saving 3 million?

Because his buyout is paid over 4 years minus what ever his new job pays.
You offer him an immediate lump sum he can take that isn't dependent on his next contract.
The same thing they did with Houston Nutt.

I mean, if both parties are mutually wanting to split and the buy-out is standing in the way of him getting out of Dodge, he'd probably be willing.
I doubt a 2 or 3 million dollar difference is worth sticking around another year and raising a new family in a city that hates your guts.
