As far as experienced depth, UF has Kelvin Taylor who will start, and he will be backed up by Matt Jones and Mack Brown, two good backs with SEC experience.

That's UF's PROVEN depth. Many think Adam Lane, who looked very good in the spring, will make a huge move up the depth chart this year.

I'll believe it when I see it.

It's a good year in the SEC, but I think a lot of people are sleeping on UF's RB's because of the disaster on the offensive line last year and because there are so many other big names in the conference this year.

The Vols OL is a disaster right now.

Currently, they have a true freshman, Coleman Thomas, starting at right tackle, and a walk on, Jacob Gilliam, starting at LT. He's starting cause the JUCO they recruited isn't immediately panning out. Neither have ever started, and the walkon has only appeared in 3 games in 4 years.

Mack Crowder at center has started 1 career game, and although Marcus Jackson, and Kyler Kerbyson, the guards, have the most experience on the team, it is only a combined 5 starts.

That means, UT will only have 6 starts on their starting OL when the season kicks off....

That is baaaaaaaaaad.

I understood fine. Those will be the top 3 backs in rotation. They're not the only 3 backs on the team.

Lane will be a SR and get the nod early
Hurd will more than likely be the #2
Scott will be behind him.

Bench.

Charles Mitchell, 4* back out of Sugarland, TX. Or is he not on the team any longer? My LSU friend was raving about him this time last year.

I hope Hilliard has returned to freshman form. I've heard he's dropped some weight and gotten some of his quickness back. We'll see.

MSU

Josh Robinson 5'9 225 - A bowling ball with speed. He was a much better back than starter Ladarius Perkins last year but moffan was too loyal to Perkins. Robinson ran for 101 against Arkansas.

Nick Griffin: 6'0" 225 - when healthy has looked great. Two acl tears has set him back but he is two years from last surgery and is fully healthy with an entire off-season. Another powerback with decent speed.

Ashton Shumpert - another big back and recruit. Played a lot of special teams as a freshman. Provided some key blocks in big wins and rushed for 98 yards against Alcorn State.

Aeris Williams - another big one. Listed at 6'1" 200, but will be bigger than that when the season begins. True freshman. Mr football in MS. Solid offers.

I think we are deep. One thing is for sure. Between these guys and Dak and our big qb's, it will be a physical challenge for defenses.

QBs:

Dak
Damian Williams 6'1 230
Elijah Staley 6'6 231
Nick Fitzgerald 6'5 210 and climbin

Since 2011, the SEC RB depth has been ridiculous.

In 2011 LSU had 4 RBs with at least 330 yards and 7 TDs. At least three of them had 530 yards.

In 2013 LSU had 4 RBs with at least 310 yards. At least three had 7 TDs. That is depth.

LSU and Bama have had this since 2011. UGA joined the club last year. Auburn and Arky will join it this year.

requirements are consecutive years with at least 3 productive RBs.

When talking about Auburn and MSU…

The QB must be considered in the rushing attack. Thanks to Marshall CAP, PB, RT and CG will get better looks, more yards etc..Same for Dak.

How much experience, how much production?

Where would you compare them to say what Vol fans are claiming to have?

Just as an example, because I know these off the top of my head but ...

Georgia is returning a couple of juniors, a couple of sophs and bringing in a couple of 4 or 5 star freshmen. All told, a couple of thousand yards of production already in the SEC.

SCAR is bringing back three juniors and one high-end redshirt freshmen all told with a couple of thousand yards of production under their belts in the SEC.

So how do the guys you just listed compare? More along the lines of Tennessee or more along the lines of say A&M or Arkansas or who?

LSU (Very damn close to UGA in terms of ... hell, UGA and LSU may have the two best stables of RBs in the country, bar none.)

I just put my purple and gold glasses on, and still can't see this. Let's allow them to play a game of college football first.

Robinson has two years of experience running limited carries.

Griffin is a fifth year senior because of injury.

They were the best rbs on our team as far back as two seasons ago but merlins kept feeding perkins.

Lol State is easily 3 deep with talent. Robinson, Griffin, and Shumpert.

Requirements for what?

WTF does any of that have to do with my thread title about this year?

Yes, 2011 was a great year for backs, production wise, talent wise.

I agree, the SEC is always loaded with a fair number of great RBs, but some years are better than others. I can think of some years ...

ESPN thinks I am all wrong ... they think Bama has the best group of RBs in the league this year. LINK

There are any number of single back rankings for the league this year (1 - LINK, 2 - LINK) ... problem is, no good team is going to make it through the season with just one good back. That's why this year I think this league is the deepest, most talented, year in SEC history in terms of depth AND talent throughout the league. Some prefer to look at it in terms of tandems LINK ... yet as soon as that #1 back goes down then you're limited to just one? Most coaches would laugh at that I would suspect. The best teams better have three minimum. (As a side note, to prove how bad the expert pre-season prognostigators usually miss it, here was Athlon's pre-season 2013 predictions: LINK)

He really wasn't that quick his freshman year, he was just a big battering ram that dominated. It was like Charles Scott had came back with another 2008 performance. He has lost weight every year and has gotten less effective because of it. He looked like one of the fullbacks in the spring game without the 240+ body. We need him back around 235-240 as a punishing runner. He could take over the game in the fourth quarter after Magee and Fournette have their way.
