"The likelihood of someone who didn't go to games when they're an undergrad becoming a fan at age 40 is probably one in a million," Pitt athletics director Steve Pederson said. "If you didn't participate at that time, I don't know why you'd begin later on in life."

I'm not so sure about that. Recently, an Italian friend of mine living in Germany got talked into following the Titans as well as UT. She, yes, she - mentioned that she thinks she'll like the college game better because it's less stale, more tradition, more history etc. She thinks the college game is closer to one of her favorite club soccer teams.

But I think the trick to marketing college football to young people is not just giving them decent home games to attend but also making them feel welcome - universities have over the last 30 years pushed students away, given out lousy seats, and treated students like crap on all kinds of things including requiring guests to ALSO be a student when plenty of students would love to bring a gf/bf or friend who isn't a student.

More importantly though, I think universities need to market the shared cultural and student experiences and parlay that into marketing the culture and unique experiences to adults as well. That's what make CFB special and where there's a lot of room to expand the base of fans.

And for heaven's sake, stop trying to be the NFL. It's dull as frick to a lot of people who love football at other level.

I've been saying it for years: quit playing so many cupcake games. And my alma mater is guilty as anyone.

The SEC needs to go to
9 games and require 1 OOC against a P5. And stipulate that the remaining 2 games cannot be against a FCS school.

This will go a long way to fixing things

$140 for season tickets isn't the problem ... student growth from out-of-state kids who didn't grow up X fans is one factor ... a better, more individualized experience at home with 3 tvs, better food, cheaper drinks, etc. is another ... athletic depts nickle and diming people for everything is another ... games that last 3 1/2 hrs so cbs can get their commercials in is another ... all adds up to declining attendance ...

The first Athletic Department that thinks it's smart to run the tailgating experience at a loss, and incentivize people to get their arse to the stadium will be the first AD to set the standard.

Agreed. And I'd say 9 games and 2 OOC against P5. One powder puff.

I am a sidewalk fan and proud of it. I was in the stands, a season ticket holder in the Franchione and Shula days when we were not winning big.

No fair weather fan here. I was there in the hard times and I put up with you and your fellow hyenas on the old boards too. Outlasted all of you, when the Tide turned so did you. Turned tail and ran.

I think the better question is: Has interest in attending live college football games peaked ?

HD TV, multiple games on at one time, SECN and travel expenses have made it more enjoyable to stay at home. Schools with 100K Stadiums are going to be fighting these issues for the next few years.

1. Stop the cream puff games.
2. Increase the quality of the stadium experience (more bathrooms, more concession stands, more TV's, better cell phone service, better parking).
3. Understand that milking people at the game for every cent possible is a short term cash grab that causes more long term damage. The big money comes from TV revenue and merchandise anyway. The best way to win fans is to get them to come to the games.

Gotta scale back the commercials somehow, too, which I know will probably never happen. But fewer people are willing to sit through such frequent and lengthy interruptions in play when in attendance. It can be excruciating, especially during an intense game. If you stay home, you can use that time to get a beer, take a piss, whatever. But they've got to quicken the pace if they want attendance to improve.

The major problems facing college football in the future:

1: HD cable television - Every season it seems another network buys into or is created for college football. Every college game worth seeing can now be seen on any basic cable package, and every FBS game period can be seen on some of the more extensive packages. It can be tough for many to justify hundreds/thousands of dollars to go to a game that they can have a better view for from their couch AND catch all the other action that day as well.

2: Alcohol - Most college stadiums don't sell it anywhere but the club seats and suites, and the ones that do charge ridiculous amounts of money. It is significantly cheaper to drink at tailgates or at home than at the game.

3: Technology - Most stadiums are effectively dead zones for cell usage on gameday and it isn't convenient to keep up with stats for your game or others, which is a big deal to many.

4: Marquee opponents - The majority of major conference teams fill half their home schedule with teams they are favored by 20-30 over. Especially in the SEC where there are several HUGE games every year that spoil you, why go to a game you know you will win by halftime?

The biggest steps they can take to remedy this are selling alcohol to the general public (proven to reduce alcohol incidents in the stadium), increase in-house amenities and stop scheduling Coastal Carolina.

All of this. I never leave games early unless it is some FCS team, but 90% of the time when my friends leave is to go drink somewhere.

It's not like when we leave early we stop watching the game.

Strong demand for tickets and looks like the expansion was really needed.

Its not that people aren't buying tickets. Its that people are buying tickets and the not going to the games - or leaving at halftime.

They can fix these problems, it's not like CFB attendance is doomed to a slow and painful death. If they want to get people to the stadium, they know what has to be done, it's simple economics.

here's how to keep the stadiums full:

1. massive wifi updates. I want to be able to send a text message or look at the other game scores.

2. show the game scores and highlights on the screen when commercial breaks are happening.

3. allow beer sales to the general public until the end of half time. it'll cut down on binge drinking and keep people in the stadium.

4. allow re-entry. I don't smoke, but a lot of people do. they want to go smoke outside of the stadium and come back in. if they want to give their ticket to their friend in the third quarter, let them. butts in seats, buying food and being entertained.

5. blow up the cross divisional yearly rival games so that the SEC teams from the east and west play each other at least once every 4 years.

hell, you guys play the worst OOC schedule I've ever seen. you play no one. I understand the SEC west is brutal but y'all should at least schedule one tough OOC every year.

Infrastructure for new Kyle Field will have capacity for 100,000 cell phone calls simultaneously. Getting the technology covered.

Demand for tickets is very strong.

I don't think this solves all of the problem but they need to sell alcohol in the stadium, $5 for a 12oz beer. Also have scores of other games showing in the stadium constantly instead of ads half the time.
