Using the current rankings we just had a stretch of playing.

#10 S Carolina
at #1 Alabama
at #5 Missouri

I was in school then and went to Fla and Maryland home games. Watched Boomer Esiason leave on a stretcher. After Sugar Bowl, honestly thought we had won the natty.

Everyone did. It was the single biggest frickup in the history of the AP/UPI poll since picking the champion before the bowl games.

Auburn had played the toughest schedule in the nation, including eight bowl teams, seven of which were ranked in the top 20 (four in the top ten).

Alabama faced #1 Florida and #2 Texas, as well as ten bowl teams in 2009.

Considering if Alabama goes to the title game they will lose to FSU by 24+. And if Auburn wins the SEC they will not even go to the title game (unless Ohio State loses) due to there 1 loss (and if somehow OSU loses Auburn would lose to Florida State by 35+).
I say the odds for either team doing this are not that good.

Alabama would still face 3 teams in the top 5 in your scenario, you dolt.

auburn, was that the pat dye team that beat Michigan 9-7 in the Sugar Bowl?

dye cost you that damn championship. he should've known he wasn't in the playoffs and just needed to win. He needed a ****ing touchdown!

it still pains me to think how damn conservative he was.

We faced 3 in 2006(I believe Texas was a 2, UM was 2 and then UF a 2).

Well, since we were talking about auburn being top 5 I assumed only their ranking at the point played mattered.

The odds of Bama doing it, I'd say 50%.

The odds of AU doing it, probably less than 5%.

That's just the reality of the current situation. Odds are, OSU comes out unscathed.

Interesting bit of trivia about the 1983 final polls: the top 6 ranked teams had seven losses comibined - all to one another.

#1 Miami lost to #6 UF
#2 Nebraska lost to #1 Miami
#3 AU lost to #5 Texas
#4 UGa lost to #3 AU
#5 Texas lost to #4 UGa
#6 UF lost to #3 AU and #4 UGa

Yep. Notice how Miami and Nebraska each went 1-1 against those teams while AU went 2-1 and 3-1 total against top 10 teams.

Part of me wishes Nebraska made that 2 point conversion in the '84 Orange Bowl...

Nebraska was overrated and undeserving in 1983 whether or not they kicked the extra point.

Nebraska beat 1 ranked team all year that was around #15 (PSU).

AU faced 7 ranked teams.

AU was the NC of 1983 regardless of what Nebraska did as far as I am concerned.

My top 5 of 1983:

1. AU
2. Texas
3. UGA
4. Florida
5. Miami
6. Nebraska

I put FL over Miami and Nebraska for 2 reasons:

1. They blew Miami out 28-7
2. They faced 3 top ten teams. Second only to AU and 4 top 10 teams. More than Nebraska and Miami combined.

Both of those scores are completely unreasonable.
