Cooper won't get it done. They are 9-3 with him starting at best With their D and If bo is as good as advertised their best bet is putting an athlete in the game at qb Which gives them basically another Rb. They are loaded at wr so look for qb draws end arounds screens read option etc. either way they will lose in BR unless something drastic happens at Lsu. For the first time in a long time we will field the more talented qb assuming no injuries. I hope we beat the brakes of the gumps this year.

Bateman is the best athlete we have a quarterback fwiw. He ran in the mid 4.5's in spring testing and was actually briefly moved to receiver two years ago. The staff likes Hurts arm talent and cool head over Batemans. Bateman is kind of a puss and his deep ball falls apart, and our offense needs a deep ball. See refusing to keep on the read option against Ole Miss last year, and fluttering up a lollipop down the right sideline. Bateman would be fine in a dink and dunk west coast offense, but kiffin likes to throw it vertically when the opportunity presents itself

I've been keeping an eye on that battle as I'm curious to see who's gonna be starting for them.

It'll be interesting to see how it plays out if Hurts is the guy. It usually takes some time for a true freshman to settle into ANY level of college football. Even more so in the SEC. Mistakes are going to be made as you wait for the game to slow down for them. Reading defenses, not being overwhelmed by the moment, trying to force a play vs recognizing its not there.. etc, etc.

Bama has some quality opponents on the schedule early, rather than cupcakes where they can easily win and try to get Hurts up to speed and work out any kinks in his game. IMO what happens is they start Cooper Bateman with packages for Hurts. Similar to Coker/Bateman last season. Either Bateman steps up and earns the job or they transition to Hurts when they think he's ready.

I just watched his spring game tape and I'm not getting the hype.

A lot of him looking good in the spring game was that everyone else sucked and he was the only one that got the offense moving. He also didn't go against the 1st D.

Ever heard of Chris leak?
True freshman, first start, 19-0 UF over lsu, the mighty, perfect in all ways, defensive whiz Saban as our coach in the 2003 national championship year .

He was far and away the best at their scrimmage Saturday. Blake Barnett imploded, had literally 4 or 5 turnovers, picks, fumbles, you name it. Bateman will probably start against usc,but I think hurts takes over quickly

Good Post.. I forgot all about Chris Leak.

He had Tim TeBow backing him up. Bama has no where close to Tebow as a backup. That helped Leak as a freshman.

Tebow was 2004 I am almost sure. I was at that game and it was leak all the way. In fact, zook may still have been there, I'd have to check

Tebow's first year was 2006. He backed up Leak as a freshmen during that NC season, won the heisman in 2007 as a true soph, won the NC in 2008 as the starter (Bradford won the heisman that season), and went 13-1 in 09 as a senior but got destroyed by Bama in the SECCG (Meyer started his health problems bullshite).

Several things wrong with your post. First, it wasn't 19-0. I believe it was 19-7. Second, Florida's defense really won that game for them. Third, it was not the first quarter of the season, which is when most folks are saying Bama would drop games.

Howevet, good point. Bama has a great defense. Maybe they could ride a freshman to a victory over LSU by playing suffocating defense, getting a poor performance from our QB, and their freshmen doing just enough.

It was 19-7. Leak was 18-30 for 230 yards. Florida's defense shut LSU down all day but Leak made several plays that kept LSU's offense off of the field.

I think the OL will be more important than the QB this year. I'm not sure if everyone remembers him, but Foster returns from his injury this year. There's a solid chance he's better than Ridley. Those 2 on the outside with Stewart doing his thing and Howard trying to create mismatches for LBs and safeties is going to be hell on defenses if the QB is protected.

The reason Hurts is being received so well is he seems to be cool as hell in the pocket. His ability to sense pressure and create with his legs is just a bonus.

That said, a freshman is going to have some rough times in this league. While exciting, Hurts starting is pretty scary, for me at least.
