The misconception stems from one drive against UF where he went for 4th down 4 or 5 times.
I don't recall him having an option. Would have been their last possession. That when Jacob Hester got the ball on each of 4th attempts, right?

Almost all game theorists and statisticians agree football coaches are in general too cautious and too conservative in many situations.

The aggressive play is usually thought off as "risky" by coaches, the media, and fans, even though it's the more advantageous play in the long run.

This rears its head in 3 areas usually

1. Punting for it rather than going for it on 4th down
2. Settling for a FG rather than attempt a TD
3. Not going for 2 in certain situations earlier in the game

Human beings are naturally risk averse, so high risk/high reward situations are seen as scary, even though they are often your best bets.

Let's use our imagination for a minute.

During the course of a relatively close football game, a team finds itself around midfield with a 4th and 3 situation. If the offense decides to go for it and makes it, how does that make the offense feel?...very excited, or more relieved?...and what do people generally do once they are relieved? Now if the offense is stopped, how does that make the defensive team (NOW the offensive team) feel?...excited?...pumped up with momentum in their favor?
Coaches are much more sensitive to the ebbs and flows of a game than we realize...and they damn sure know their team better than the fans.

I'd say you're delusional if you don't think he hasn't looked at the numbers
