Tom Cable: Spread offenses in college are "a huge disservice" to players LINK

Enough is enough people. Get the sand out your vag, put your hand in the dirt, and play football. All the complaining about the spread, how it prepares QB's, blah, blah, blah. It makes you sound like a bunch of scared little girls

I mean someone dug Tom Cable up to get his thoughts Who the frick cares what Tom Cable thinks.

Let's just play football

I agree. What Tom Cable thinks is irrelevant. College coaches are there to win games and try to help teenagers grow into men.

Wait, I thought the problem was the speed (HUNH) and not the formation (spread)?

Sometimes I wish people would just admit they are sticks in the mud and they want football to stay the same way because that is the way they like it.

Fricking this. Just say you don't like change and call it day. Every other day there's a new reason someone comes with why it won't work despite all evidence to the contrary.

The spread is easy and effective. That's a pretty good combo when your roster turns over every 4 yrs.

Meh... defenses will adapt and offenses will adapt ... just like the wishbone, the dance goes on.

NFL coaches

And even that is a bit of a stretch. Look at all of the players (excluding Tebow) Urban Meyer put in the NFL who continue to be major contributors.

If NFL coaches can't mold players to fit their schemes and execute it effectively they're going to fail no matter what system they have in place.

I don't think this is analogous to the wishbone. You can't throw out of the wishbone and the spread you can use any pro-set concept. Oregon runs power O, ISOs, Wham, straddle option zone read, you name it out of the spread. I keep seeing this and laugh because the wishbone has inherit flaws and the spread doesn't.

Fair point. My point was not about the flaws/technique of the wishbone, merely that at the time people thought it was here to stay.

My argument is that the defenses aren't going to adapt. Quite the opposite really...defenses really have a conundrum. Oregon has to face Stanford's ogre sets that use 9 300 linemen and turn around and play 5 WR receiver sets. If anything, defenses are going to have to pick their poison.

And it's the same in the SEC West. Play LSU and turn around and play aTm.

The spread offense is about putting players in space. I don't see football ever going to a dominant strategy. I think we might see more teams incorporate pro-set packages but I can't see a big shift back to pro-style.

yeah, why would what a current nfl position and assistant head coach has to say on the shitty fundamentals of players coming out of college have any relevance or weight? Hes totally not in a position to speak about such things.

^This.

Beyond that 'the spread offense' is about as amorphous and ill-defined as it gets. These same analysts and pundits were saying Peyton Manning wouldn't make a good NFL QB because he took too many snaps from the shotgun which is a spread formation. Oddly enough, not only did he succeed but he brought the shotgun with him to Indy and as well known for calling it as an audible.

"Spread offense" is an overused term that's virtually meaningless for several reasons not the least of which is that many, many, completely different offenses that look nothing alike and function very differently can all be classed as spread.

There's no reason to ever go back to 3 yards and a cloud of dust.

With the rules of the NFL geared towards offensive players any team that's not willingly to open things up and take advantage is doing themselves a disservice.

We're over it! 55-44. Out spread the spread. Out Gus'd the Gus Bus. Beat you at your own game.
