Dodd had good reasons to be upset at Bear -

"Dodd's tenure included Georgia Tech's withdrawal from the Southeastern Conference. The initial spark for Dodd's withdrawal was a historic feud with Alabama Crimson Tide Coach Bear Bryant. The feud began when Tech was visiting the Tide at Legion Field in Birmingham in 1961. After a Tech punt, Alabama fair-caught the ball. Chick Granning of Tech was playing coverage and relaxed after the signal for the fair catch. Darwin Holt of Alabama continued play and smashed his elbow into Granning's face causing severe fracturing in his face, a broken nose, and blood-filled sinuses. Granning was knocked unconscious and suffered a severe concussion, the result of which left him unable to play football ever again. Dodd sent Bryant a letter asking Bryant to suspend Holt after game film indicated Holt had intentionally injured Granning. Bryant never suspended Holt. The lack of discipline infuriated Dodd and sparked Dodd's interest in withdrawing from the SEC.

Another issue of concern for Dodd was Alabama's and other SEC schools' over-recruitment of players. Universities would recruit more players than they had roster space for. During the summer practice sessions, the teams in question would cut the players well after signing day thus preventing the cut players from finding new colleges to play for. Dodd appealed the SEC administration to punish the "tryout camps" of his fellow SEC members but the SEC did not. Finally, Dodd withdrew Georgia Tech from the SEC in 1964."

Ga. Tech was a very strong program at the time and envisioned themselves as being the Notre Dame of the South

Bear was a great coach, but he wandered outside the lines pretty often to maintain a competitive advantage. I guess since he drank so much, he literally walked outside the lines a lot too.

I think he was just trying to let people know that the "bear" was a DRUNK. It's sad that the rest of the SEC got beat by some drunk.

Let me answer that with an analogy. Let's say you are playing cards with someone and they continually reach in and give themselves twice as many cards as everyone else. You point this out to the dealer and he just looks the other way. Your choices are to cheat also or go to another table and play. If you are honorable, you would have no part of the cheating and go to another table.

If choosing to go to another table instead of joining in on the cheating meets the definition of "making him quit", the answer is "yes".

If you are referring to the Peach Bowl, unfortunately yes. You guys had some huge quarterback that we made look like a Heisman candidate. Serious question, whatever happened to him?

Bobby Dodd hated recruiting against Bryant. At that time birmingham/Montgomery was the recruiting hotbed. "The hit" just intensified the hatred. All the younguns on here can't fathom how bad Bama and tech hated each other. Folks have tried and tried to get this game back on. Still refuse to play each other to this very day.

Well we actually did play for several years after we left the SEC. From 1979-1984 we played every season. You guys went 4-2 against us those years. Those were some historically bad Tech teams as well. The end of the Pepper Rodgers days and the beginning of the Bill Curry years. The 1981 game you guys were ranked #2 and lost to us 24-21. That was the only game we won that season. Lol.

Overall you guys lead the series 28-21-3. Pretty competitive. There are a lot of Tech fans that miss the old rivalries (especially the Bama, Tennessee and Auburn games) and would like to be back in the SEC just to play those games but honestly overall the SEC is not really a good fit for Tech anymore.
