“It’s easier to get hired (to a head coaching position) as an offensive coach nowadays,” CBS analyst Gary Danielson said. “The last 20 rule changes in college football have all been made to help the offense. It’s hard to get great stats as a defensive coach. It’s just the way it is.

“You go into a room, you meet with athletic directors, you can wow them by putting the spread on the board, show them how you’re going to run up all these scores. For years, I’ve been saying they are running too many plays and the games are getting too long, but none of them want to give up their stats. They love these stats.”

It makes for great theater on Saturday afternoons. All but one SEC team averaged more than 360 yards per game last year; eight averaged more than 400, and Mississippi State averaged a staggering 513. But Danielson wonders if the conference might be starting to sell its soul for shiny silver.

“The big advantage the SEC had against other conferences was they were the most physical, NFL-like conference there was,” he said. “If they try to morph too much into becoming a fantasy league, they are going to cede their position as the toughest and best conference in college football.”

It does appear that the SEC is becoming the Patriot League. We haven't won a NC in two entire seasons. Danielson may be have a point.

Danielson on the Sugar Bowl:

"I think Alabama should win handily."

And yes I know almost everyone predicted Bama to win but I've been mad since he went on a 3 hour rant about the SEC in 2006 to get Florida into the title game. UF should have been in the game no doubt but I was disgusted by the way he ranted during a game

It appears as if Gary thinks the SEC gives a shite about what he thinks. He's just trying to create conversation at media days and keep himself relevant.

I think the Muschamp and Chavis hires illustrates teams still want to be physical on defense. However, the days of shutdown, 3-2 , defensive slug fest are gone.

As highly rated as these guys are, they won't have as much success under the spread as they did with power running teams...There is no way that Auburn 2015 will be more physical than say Auburn 2007.

That was probably the most physical defensive game I've been to in some time

I think that has less to do with scheme and more to do with Tommy Tubberville and Sylvester Croom getting the boot.

Say what you want but Tubs appeared to hate scoring points when he was at Auburn. He was a defensive guy to the core but you look at his teams with Texas Tech and Cincinnati and he's done a complete 360.

Football is cyclical. The spread, HUNH offense are popular now but there will likely be a completely differently style of play 10 years down the line.

I said basically the same thing before the 2012 BCS championship:

quote:

I cannot stand the direction college football is going for the most part. All these hurry up, no huddle spread passing offenses and no defense. I know Petrino runs a spread, and has run quite a bit hurry up no huddle this year, and our defense has not always been up to par, but at least we have SOME defense and we implement SOME power run.

I'm glad the national championship is between two teams that have respectable styles of play. Two teams that win games in the trenches, with physical play, and with high caliber athletes throughout the offense AND defense.

The rest of college football can continue pussy-footing around with their high school-esque play; and I hope Arkansas soon joins LSU and Bama in their physical, dominating brand of football.

The day the SEC loses its identity and joins the rank of pussy arse football is the day I quit giving a frick about college football. If I want to watch a 57-49 game I'll play a game of NFL blitz on N64.

Defenses will figure it out. It takes time for teams to readjust the kind of players they're recruiting to match what opponents are running. The spread and HUNH are relatively new things among major southern programs. Recruits that used to be considered tweeners are now extremely valuable.

Didn't Gary write the same article in 1906 when the forward pass started happening?
