I'm gonna rant a little here. My pet peeve is how 99% of broadcasters will say a team that's 20-10 is "10 games over .500"

Think about it though.. if they played 30 games, winning 15 would be ".500". That team won 5 more, so they are 5 games over .500. if you think otherwise your dumb and should enroll at Mississippi State or something.

while that is a valid argument at the end of the season.. how do you classify a team that has played 16 games and is 16-0?

1 game above .500?

No worries.. I’ll call and get you the enrollment data at Miss State.

Or - they were 10-10 and sitting at .500 after 20 games.

Then they won 10 straight to go 10 games above .500

I'd say 16-0 team is 8 games above .500

I went to the record calculator and 20-10 is 50%.

Now back to studying for my urine test coming up…..

The total doesn't matter. It's how many wins or losses a team needs to get to an even record at that point in time.

If a team is 16-0, how many games do you have to go back until they actually were .500?

You say 8 games. But if you do they would then be 8-0.

For a 16-0 team to be at .500, you would have to go back 16 games to when they were 0-0.

Thus the answer is 16, not 8.

I do like this thread. Both grammatical and mathematical errors living together in harmony.

I'm not saying what would they have to do in the future to get to .500. I'm talking right now. The present. If 16 games have been played a 500 team will have won 8 games. A 16-0 team is then 8 games above the level of a 500 team (right now).

You ae only adding the wins. By taking away losses you get further from .500

They only had 10 losses, not 15 which puts you further from .500 the same way a win does if you are counting from the 15-15 number.

You are really starting from 10-10 and adding 10 wins. Or you could start from 20-0 and add 10 losses.

If you were, that’d mean winning one game would put you at .500 even though you’re 1-2.

No, it means I've won one less game than half I've played.
