the greatest duo to call a game would have to be Jack Arute and Peter Burns. would be some legendary shite right there. maybe calling a game pitting Joey Freshwater against Bobby Petrino.

If we sign Herman it will be with an ironclad buyout clause that is so expensive not even Texas would touch it.

They're still paying Mac Brown and they'd still have to pay Strong big money ... it would make the Tennessee payoffs look cheap.

If we do sign Herman - we'll sew-it-up and make it tough for anyone to come and try to take him.

Besides, once he is here for a couple of years he will not want to leave. This place is paradise ... God's Country. It's the end of the rainbow, the promised land, Shangri-La on the horizon.

If he is doing well he will not want to leave ... but we'll make sure to make it very tough for him to leave. I'm not the least bit worried about that. Ray Tanner has Mike McGee, Eric Hyman and Skip Bertman counseling him on this hire ... there will be no Ts uncrossed or Is undotted when the contract is finally signed ... if it happens.

Exactly, we could give him a lot of $, like $4M a year, sign a 5 year deal and have a 100% buyout. Not even UTx is going to fork over $20M next year on just a buyout, especially when they're still paying old coaches already.

I second this. Folks don't really seem to understand how wealthy Texas is. TAMU as well.

The expectations at Texas are no worse than Bama; nor are the alums. And they've got tons of money to boot.

Someone will take that job.

I remember thinking the same thing about Bama...the fans were ridiculously demanding in this era of college fb parity. Then BAM, they hire Saban

Texas is capable of the same.

Why would anyone pay someone that has been a head coach less than a whole year $4mm? This coaching thing is out of control!

Why would he agree to that?

I agree, coaching salaries are totally out of control and Herman is also negotiating salaries for his staff that he wants to bring with him ... so they too will be highly paid.

It's not going to be $4 million for Herman though, more like $3.4 million plus incentives with a guaranteed five year contract and the option to extend. The buyout is going to be excessive on both sides of the fence but that doesn't concern SCAR because they want the five year deal and they'll give him the time.

Herman has not requested, nor would he be given, a walk-away clause for Texas like, for instance, the one Lou Holtz insisted-up at Minnesota with regard to the Notre Dame job. No one, no program, allows those clauses in contracts anymore.

Why does anyone agree to anything in contracts? If the $ is right, the $ is right and Tom Herman does NOT want to end up in Missouri.

Sport salaries, in general, have been out of control for 35 years.

But hey, its what the public is willing to pay, so I say more power to them.

Well, yes ... but it's what the market will bear and the SEC allows us all to have deep pockets and hire the best coaches available when other programs cannot. I realize this does not apply to Texas or SoCal but still, it is what it is.

SCAR is consistently ranked in the Top 15 of wealthiest athletic departments and football programs in the country. We can afford anyone, provided they win. That's the catch. If they win then they pay for themselves plus some.

If Herman ditches USCe after a year, will Gamecock fans show that the Spurrier era has elevated them to a serious football program by outdoing UT's reaction to Kiffin leaving? They have to riot or nobody will take them seriously as a modern football power.

Oh I agree. Right now there no better than we are. They got the history and we don't. That's all they have over us right now

Well, they're not just richer, they're a lot richer. But let's just call it a wash because there's only so much anyone is willing to pay for a coach and USCe could -- though probably won't unless it's a huge homerun hire -- pay every bit as much as Texas.

But let's not ignore recruiting. Texas definitely has a significant recruiting advantage over USCe in terms of local talent. It's hard to argue that's not a major part of a job's attractiveness.

My only advice for South Carolina fans is not to get too upset when Smart is named as your head coach.
