Was not driving but found passed out in his car and blew a .138.

Kirby said he will be suspended but was not clear for just how long (at least 2 games for the DUI but likely much longer given the repeat offense and seriousness of the problem). Likely going to rehab and will be required to attend Counseling as the kid clearly has a problem. The quotes from the arrest report are pretty revealing (on phone so tough to link). Ledbetter has also issued a statement in which he acknowledges that he has a problem.

So the question is is this the right move? Kid that repeatedly screws up but clearly has an alcohol problem is kept on the team but has to undergo intensive rehab and counseling in addition to the typical suspension and discipline. Right call?

Kind of a stretch to say a college kid drinking has "a problem" just because of a few dumb decisions.

Likely he's just really stupid

Right call IMO. He'll get more discipline & education for his stupid decisions while still on the team than if he got booted. He's only 19 yrs old - still a kid, not an alcoholic just makes stupid decisions.

I was always told, enjoy drinking so much in college because after that it gets called alcoholism. It starts like this a lot of the time, but hes got talent and time to turn this shite around.

Based on some of the commentary from the UGA board (folks that have seen him downtown) he likes to hit the bottle a bit more than the usual guy. He may not be a full blown alcoholic yet but it's safe to say that he's headed that way. In particular, he mentioned that he has to provide for himself and his family so it makes me wonder if he is self medicating

Its only the right call if Smart doesn't let him on the field until he is truly sober. Taking football away from this kid might be the only way for him to truly understand he has a problem. I know he admitted to having a problem but lets see if he feels the same way a few months from now.

I think in this case, kicking him off the team could do more harm than good. If he has a problem, then taking football away could make it worse. I think this is the correct call. Keep a close eye on him and have him go to counselling. If he cleans up then you can have the conversation about working back in to playing time.

I should have been more clear. I meant keeping on the team but not allowing him to play. I don't know anything about this guy but some people need tougher love than others. I just think its important that Smart really determines whether he is changed before he lets him set foot on the field.

Oh, I wasn't necessarily commenting on anything you said. Just that we shared somewhat similar sentiments.

Gotcha, well I hope it works out for him. He is too young to go down this path.

Or he might just end up a criminal on the streets because he wasn't allowed to keep playing a game that could potentially allow him to properly care for his family. So far he hasn't hurt anyone. Yes he deserves punishment, which will include loss of playing time, but it is just plain nonsense to think kicking him off the team is in his best interest.

Does this guy have a kid? Because that's the ONLY reason a 19 yr old should be worried about providing for his "family."

Brother got processed, so he started hitting the bottle because "family is very important" to the Ledbetter's.

I didn't ever say to kick him off the team. Taking football away can mean many things.

Nope - UGA can provide "quality" professional help, counseling and education that he will not be able to obtain on his own. He has a better chance with the help of quality professionals that UGA will provide than some damn state paid social worker or juvenile counselor that he'd get on his own.

Why didn't you say taking away playing time if that's what you meant?
