Bobby Bowden was“Promised” the Bama job after Bryant retired. It didn’t happen. When there was a possibility FSU could join the SEC Bowden was against the move. They could win more championships by not being in the SEC and having to play tougher teams during the regular season.
At least that’s what I remember.

FSU best bet is to calm down and stay in the ACC. They'll get in the playoffs starting next year with almost no resistance.

Probably this. Something happened that has pissed FSU off, though. Probably because they are not getting their way on conference revenue sharing.

That's what FSU did in the late 80s and 90s.

Fsu was independent in the 80s.

UF kept FSU from winning at least 1 natty for sure.

Needed a rematch to do it.

The ACC might not have been great in FSU’s prime, but they played Miami and Florida every year. I know they had a home and home with Auburn in 89-90. They played Michigan and Notre Dame in the early ‘90s. They beat Nebraska pretty much annually in bowl games.

If FSU had been in the SEC from 1987-2000, I think they at least hold serve on the 1993 and 1999 titles and maybe pick up another one somewhere.

I think the 1987 and 1988 FSU teams run the table in the SEC and have a shot at a national title in the bowl season.

The 1989 team was playing great football after slipping out of the gate.

The 1991 team may or may not have had a little more focus against Florida and beat them if they had not already lost to Miami (and basically the national title) in the previous game.

1992 Alabama would have had a bitch of a time beating FSU in a regular season game or SEC championship.

The 1994 team likely runs the table and plays Nebraska in the Orange Bowl.

The 1996 team split with Florida. Just lost the game that mattered. Maybe they avoid a rematch if in the same conference.

There are a lot of possibilities in these scenarios. If they had been in the SEC and all the rosters were the same, I don’t think 1987-2000 FSU comes away with any fewer national titles than they already won and probably would have had a better chance at some others with FSU usually playing its best ball late and with split title possibilities in those days.

It’s interesting to think about.

Your head coach said several times that the road through the SEC was tougher. #DelusioNOLE

When was the last time UF was 13-0?
