LF7 : Coach held me out of bowl game (NFL.com)

quote:

When the former LSU RB announced he would not play in the Citrus Bowl against Louisville, he portrayed the decision as a mutual one between himself and LSU coach Ed Orgeron. Fournette said at the time that he was still dealing with the left ankle injury that had hampered him all season and kept him out of four games, but he still was criticized by some for not playing.

On Friday, though, Fournette said he didn't really have a say in the bowl-game decision.

quote:

"To be honest, it really wasn't my decision," Fournette told NFL Now Live. "My coach brought me into the office. He told me 'You have a lot on the line.' He didn't want me to play. I cried like a baby. It was hard for me. That was my first time not really traveling with the team and I couldn't play in a game with my brothers. I'm going to miss them."

Later in the interview, Fournette reiterated the point, saying "my coach made (the decision) for me."

quote:

“We know this is a tough decision for Leonard, but he has a bright future ahead,” Orgeron added. “He will always be one of the greatest players in LSU football history.”

Do not believe

He's not going to come out and say he signed with an agent prior to the end of the season

Something smells like bullshite. If you're going to sit out a game, at least be man enough to take responsibility for that choice.

Gump's obsession with Fournette is fascinating.

Orgeron seems to imply it was LF7s decision. Weird.

Complete bullshite. He defended the decision as his own immediately afterwards and now he is passing the buck to his coach because NFL scouts are questioning him about it.

Its good public relations: he didn't want to play and risk injury that would hamper his draft stock, and now he doesn't want to come across as not being a team player to NFL teams who may draft him, so he's placing the responsibility of the choice out of his hands.

And I doubt Coach O will say anything now to contradict his new story, as Coach O doesn't want LF's draft stock to fall either....

If it helped him in some way, I'd be like whatever, but what is there to gain by changing the story now?

I assume to preempt backlash from the "quit on the team" narrative that will inevitably pop up (as bullshite as it is).

Don't really think it's going to do that.

The is probably closer to the truth. We have seen NFL scouts go after everyone hoping to get a reaction from them. They probably wanted to see his reaction to being label a "quitter".

I've heard third-hand info from someone who is supposedly legit that LF7 wasn't invested in this season at all and a few coaches on the staff, including O, wouldn't have exactly missed him had he left the team prior to the season even starting.

I'm kinda starting to believe that with these mixed up stories and everything.

I believe you. Fournette has always struck me as self-centered.
