“I have done this job a long time and I don’t blame Kevin Sumlin. If someone is going to give you $5 million a year for six years, it would have been stupid of him to turn it down,” Hyman said. “But the contract was given to me, and it was ‘This is what we are going to do.’ I looked at myself and I was stunned. “I had no say so over it. I’ve been doing this job for a long time. I had worked with Steve Spurrier for years, and he was paid a heck of a lot less than Coach Sumlin. And he won national championships after conference championships. And then you are making this commitment to a person, and again I don’t blame Kevin, that’s never won a conference championship.

Ridiculous contract aside, Hyman might have been the worst AD that A&M has ever hired. It's not really a surprise to see him say something like that when he pretty much worked against A&M athletics best interests while employed.

Was That Contract Hyman’s decision?

It had to have popped into someone's head, then they hammered out the specifics. I'm sure they'd like to rip it up now.

These coaching contracts for unproven coaches are crazy - same with extensions.

Can't blame Sumlin for signing his name to it.

Exactly!
Look at Nebraska coach.(Riley) he went 6-7, 9-4, got a raise and extension! Now looses to some Nobody last week, and the AD got fired. It reminds me of these big COO types getting millions in bonuses when the company is losing billions

Hyman was not a good AD and I'm sure he's covering himself to some extent, but I don't doubt what he says. Fans who follow the program knew this to be true before he was ever around. If you want to know how a "sleeping giant" never wakes up and remains mediocre, how he describes our football program (which is what most boosters only care about) is how.

I hope our current AD or one down the line has the balls to stand up and try to change the way people think, even if it might cost him his job. Otherwise we will probably be stuck in the cycle we are in

Which is funny because Hyman presided over one of the best periods ever of South Carolina athletics.

BZ GOING DEEP

I think we all knew Hyman was a big pussy, pun intended, but it's funny he ran to the Star-Telegram to basically confirm it to anyone who cares

Blame the fans for tossing a coach to the side after a bad season or two. The extensions are for recruiting purposes because the the previous sentence.

Hyman never understood what being an aggie truly is. That's why he didn't succeed here.

“I learned this as a young, 33-year-old athletic director: VMI people are brilliant. They come to a meeting in a three-piece suit and they leave their brains at home. There are some schools that are more than that; A&M, to a certain extent, had more people like that. They would say things and do things that are mind-boggling.”

"There are some things that I felt because of my ethical standards I was not a good fit. I felt if I had to do it again, I would probably do a lot better job of researching it."

Basically saying A&M leadership is dumb and unethical.

Looks like the AD is just a puppet for the big money boosters. In that case y'all can play musical chairs with the AD and it'll never get better cause the people behind the scenes are calling the shots and they aren't going anywhere.
