No denying this. I personally am happy he was looking to make the hit. Like you said possible fumble, you never know but him putting his head down is going to get called every time.

Yeah agree. And while I think it was within the definition of targeting, I don't mind that they ultimately didn't rule it as so. Such an awkward rule...

And by the way... no matter that the entire nation saw it, the LSU fan will just say the rule is BS, or something similar was not called earlier, or that it wasn't a late hit or spearing, or that it shouldn't be a rule and that LSU was victimized by that ugly Loston spearing targeting late hit.

I'm an LSU fan and I thought it was targeting for what it's worth.

How could it have been a late hit?
The receiver wasn't down. He rolled over LSU's CB, Mills. Knee never touched the ground.

It looked like Loston also led with his shoulder on the hit.

Let's say Loston doesn't go for the hit. Receiver continues to run and it's ruled a TD. Loston gets hammered for not trying to stop him.

Similar play for auburn in BCSNCG when they scored a late TD.

Call made no difference in the outcome though.

I believe it should have been targeting but I disagree about the actual call of late hit. Norwood wasn't down and the forward progress whistle was blown pretty late

In the position Norwood was in, it was going to take about another 2 seconds for him to get up, if at all. The guy on the ground had a good hold of him. Loston easily could have pushed him over without diving head first into him.

His helmet was clearly the main point of contact.

Absolutely. They showed one angle from behind Loston a bit... it looked to me like Loston had slowed up a bit, and then lowered down and dove in. It looked to me like he clearly tried to spear the receiver. JMHO.

Ha Ha didn't lead with his helmet. The only contact above the shoulders was from Ha Ha's facemask which isn't targeting.

Targeting doesn't even have to involve the helmet. It is simply when a player premeditates launching himself in attempt to frick somebody up who is defenseless.

It was a horrible call, because it was the textbook definition of targeting

Norwood was not a defenseless player. If his progress was really stopped and he was wrapped up then the play should have been blown dead. Since the whistle is not blown then he must still be moving forward.

Other than missile drop kicking the guy I don't understand how he goes in for a tackle any other way.

Agree 100%. I thought it was a BS call from the get-go. Complete and utter garbage. Norwood was not down yet nor had a whistle blown.
