Agreed. One of the best traditions in college football.

I'll probably get blasted for this but...

Do any other AU fans feel like the Eagle flight has lost its luster the last 3-4 years?

It's still cool for sure but it seems like the Eagle pretty much just flies from the perch maybe circles like a quarter of the stadium and then lands.

Back in the mid 00s I feel like it used to circle for much longer and was much much cooler. Is this just nostalgia or did they start shortening the flights?

Eagle joined the union. Now works less for more pay. It's the American way.

Notice the closed beak...

Yikes. This is real. It tried to pick up a kid and fly off with it but dropped it.

Found an article of one taking a toddler 2 miles, kids clothes got stuck on a tree and it let him go.

I don't think it could take off with Bert.

The toddler one you showed was proven to be a fake I thought.

Toddle has a shadow but the eagle does not.

No. Nova just likes to eat too much but she's had a couple of flights comparable to Sprits in length. They never get old or lackluster to me no matter what the length. The tradition is so unique that I don't see how it would get old to anyone

I think the flights are shorter, but I don't think it is really on purpose or planned.

I think it has to do more with the birds. For the longest time, tiger was the primary flier, and she would take a long time to come down, usually make one full lap around the field, sometimes more. Once they retired her and started flying Spirit/Nova, the personality of the birds changed.

Nova seems to want to take the most direct route to the lure and Spirit does whatever the hell Spirit wants.

I wouldn't say it's gotten old, just doesn't seem quite as awesome as it used to.

Nova's flight has become predictable. Spirit on the other hand, brings it.

We need moar of Spirit

How long do the birds live? And do they get to a point where they are "too old" to perform the flight?

The eagle is a scavenger and predator. Not exactly the best image for our country to project to others. Benjamin Franklin wanted the wild turkey to be our national symbol and I think we can all agree it would have been a more noble bird.

I want to say that the average lifespan of an eagle in the wild is 26 years. Tiger was 34 when she died this summer.

As for getting too old to fly, not really sure. Tiger was retired in I think 2006, so that would have made her about 26 when she stopped flying. Maybe they stop when they reach approximate life span, or when health issues make flights a struggle.

Y'all got a bald eagle now too?

Yes

Thats unfortuante. A bald eagle should never be in captivity. Just like the flag should never be dipped or another flag flown above it.

I assume the bald eagle was injured and after rehab could not be released into the wild.

I distinctly remember seeing one for the first time on the river.

I saw one swoop down and catch a fish when I was about 10 fishing on Lake Guntersville. One of the coolest things I've ever seen.
