No one in here is being a smart arse. You're just being ignorant of how that word is utilized today. It's used literally the same as guy, man, and dude would be. Not the derogatory term you saw dropped in Roots over and over
I don't like the word. I don't say the word. Some guys on this site should just get a clue. There's no racism going on here

Exactly, these kids act like being civilized is an old people thing. It's the most absurd thing I have ever heard, and it's just plain trashy,

I'm defining "smart-assed" as someone who is making assumptions about what I know and what I don't.

Smart-assed kid.

I never said Harrison was being a racist, I just said that he used a racist slur. If you don't understand that distinction now, I suspect you will should you be lucky enough to grow up.
But answer my question, how will you respond when kids are trying to tell you about how the world works when you are old? You just gonna sit there and take it, or are you gonna be a man tell them to get the frick off your lawn?

36-45 were the best years IMO. Damn.

quote:youve definitely made that clear, I just think it's funny you call it a racist slur when it involves a derogatory term meant for blacks and it's directed to a white Jewish kid . No one takes notice that "you're a bitch" is a sexist term when a male poster says it to another male poster. It's just weird.

You don't think calling a white kid a "N**** could be an insult? It sure as hell could.

Actually, it sounds like you are so desperate for street cred, and to appear to be "down", that you are willing to sacrifice solid reasoning and common sense to achieve it... relax, buddy, you are just falling in line with the current political and social bullcrap that is being shoved down young throats today... just like all your idiot, inexperienced in life, gullable friends....

Like punishment will work what are they going to do kick him out of school. He is going to the NBA anyway so what would be the point?

Although I am calling out the stupid kids who think they know better than people who have been around a lot longer - and who have been stupid kids themselves once upon a time.
This isn't a generational thing, n***** has been a racial slur for a long time, even though it's been used affectionately for just as long. I don't know why kids think that it's some kind of new thing. THAT'S what got me suckered in to the thread, dumb kids being presumptuous, not the race thing.
All derogatory terms for race or ethnicity have an accompanying history of appropriation by their targets.
Like you say, it's certainly nothing new or specific to young people today.
It was extremely prevalent during the period of colonialization and would almost certainly be just as common in ancient times if there were more written records.
I'm also sure that arguments have long raged over whether appropriation (or re-appropiation) dilutes a certain slur or re-enforces it.
There's really no easy answer.
However, a bit of critical reasoning in determining context and overall fair mindedness goes a long way. It's mainly too bad we live in a culture that's a bit poor on both counts.
