The best way to marginalize programs like UAB is to make the Power Five teams come to an agreement. No FCS or non-Power Five opponents can be put on the schedule. You want to compete for championships? Play the best to beat the best. Let capitalism decide the fate of UAB Football. They will either commit and become a power worthy of inclusion in a Power Five conference or they will die a slow and painful death.

NAh.

Best way.

Set Benchmarks.

You need to reach X in attendance.

You need to reach X in donations.

You need to create a booster club that generates X amount a year.

You have X number of years to reach these goals or the program is closed.

How the thing should have been handled from the beginning tbh.

No. Because if the UA BOT were to do that they would be seen as trying to undermine the program. Many might see the goals set by them as unmakeable. And they probably would be. UAB isn't some program on the verge of becoming a powerhouse. They're a doormat used by the Power Five schools to rest and recuperate before conference play starts.

So, like every other school in Conference USA?

UAB will never be a power 5, but with appropriate benchmarks they could be a good C-USA team.

Yes. And we subsidize those clowns by scheduling them for an easy win. Schools like Alabama and Auburn get nothing out of playing those schools. It doesn't help our ranking, our pedigree, nor does it bring in a large surplus of cash. A lot of these SEC stadiums are 25% empty when schools like UAB come to town. We all lose money, plus we pay out $500,00 to the school just so they can come in and lose 45-7.

It's also risky because these games are where you tend to lose role players to long-term injury.

And who cares if they're a good C-USA team? The landscape of football is changing. Sooner or later the 64+ teams in the P5 are going to break off from the NCAA and form their own division with their own rules and regulations. I doubt we will be seeing too much of the UABs of the world on our schedules when that finally happens.

That means all of these C-USA teams are going to shrivel up and die if they don't adapt and try to become more than just a C-USA team.

The only answer, has nothing to do with the fact that two of our biggest rivals are non-conference in Florida.

Haven't you only played Miami 4 times in the regular season in the last quarter century?

We play Michigan and Fsu. Two almost guaranteed top ten teams. Good luck having a better schedule

Ray Watts, that's UAB alum Ray Watts btw, has got to be the luckiest SOB alive. He singlehandedly kills and resurrects Blazer football with nothing but his pen, and all the mindless frickwits in this state blame the decision on some Manchurian candidate/evil boardroom conspiracy out of Tuscaloosa instead

Hatred runs very high for Watts amongst the UAB student body and some faculty since that day.

Why is UAB held to this arbitrary standard that no other program in the country is held to? Several fundraising goals have already been met. The students voted on a fee increase. Attendance was up in 2014 because the team actually had a pulse.

Watts is still in office despite a vote of no confidence from the faculty senate and repeated calls to resign. Now, how could that be? What a mystery. I just can't figure it out.

Given that Florida's played more high ranked OOC in the regular season over the last 20 or so years, the continual asking about our schedule is just laughable.

FSU doesn't count because you play them every year. It's a rivalry game.

This is such bullshite- if Bama played Ohio State every year you guys would tout it but since the state of Florida has dominated college football for three decades we can't count instate opponents?

At the end of the day, the students at UAB won and beat the good old boy system in Tuscaloosa. Most current UA students supported their sister school and it is a sign that maybe the days of running things through back rooms in secret deals is coming to a close.

Nah, the flagship institution for the U of A system is Tuscaloosa. UAB is a "branch" the same way Huntsville is. Also, Nothing happens without UA signing off on it and if UA didn't want UAB to have a team I can assure you, there wouldn't be one.
If UAB can support itself then cool, go for it. Being subsidized by the TUSCALOOSA CAMPUS, and yes they were, the system as a whole doesn't need that debt.

Now with that being said, when do you Aubies order your season tix for the Blazer games? I'm sure you're gonna make them a perm opponent ever year as well? After all, it was Aubs who lobbied hardest to get the program back. The biggest support you can give them besides money is making them a perm OOC game every year. That would pretty much cover their recruiting budget.

I can tell you UAB expects it. As one UAB coach told me, we expect the Auburn fans to support us in the same manner and we need them in the seats on our thurs night games (yes, they plan to schedule a lot in the first few years) so if it doesn't work this time, they will blame you.

I donate to UAB annually.

Why does it bother you anyway?

It is laugh you say UA carries UAB financially. UAB is the second largest job provider in the state. It is the billion dollar net worth of UAB that UA uses as collateral to improve the UA campus.

Why are you so opposed to them having football. The students agreed to pay more out of pocket to keep it. The city is paying to help offset cost. They now have a booster org that has raised millions.

blazer boosters post record success

quote:

Donations to Blazer Boosters, the fundraising arm of UAB Athletics, exceeded $5 million in 2015 — a record achievement made possible through the unprecedented support of fans, friends and supporters.

quote:

Blazer Boosters membership increased 36.4 percent in 2015, and nearly 1,500 members made generous donations. Annual scholarship contributions surpassed $1.3 million this giving year, while more than $18 million was pledged toward the enhanced support of the football, bowling and rifle programs

Moot point. UA BoT got embarrassed by this. They got worried by possible legislative action and PBjr is now off the board.

UAB won and I do not see why that chafes the arse of any Alabama football fan. More football is never a bad thing. If they win C-USA and Jack State wins FCS you could have three champions in football in one state.
