Alabama and LSU were incredible in 2011, and clearly the two best teams in the country. There is absolutely no denying that. There are a lot of stats that are fun to look at in retrospect.

Let's recap the Game of the Century, in terms of scoring:

LSU:
Drew Alleman 2nd 00:00 FG 19 yds - Good
Drew Alleman 4th 14:13 FG 30 yds - Good
Drew Alleman OT 15:00 FG 25 yds - Good

ALABAMA:
Cade Foster 1st 12:09 FG 44 yds - Missed
Cade Foster 1st 02:17 FG 50 yds - Missed
Jeremy Shelley 2nd 12:46 FG 49 yds - Blocked
Jeremy Shelley 2nd 03:53 FG 34 yds - Good
Cade Foster 3rd 07:56 FG 46 yds - Good
Cade Foster OT 15:00 FG 52 yds - Missed

Now, the title game, 1/9/11:

ALABAMA:
Jeremy Shelley 1st 1:54 FG 23 yds - Good
Jeremy Shelley 2nd 4:18 FG 34 yds - Good
Jeremy Shelley 2nd 1:59 FG 41 yds - Good
Jeremy Shelley 3rd 2:11 FG 50 yds - Good
Jeremy Shelley 3rd 3:01 FG 20 yds - Good
Trent Richardson 4th 1:39 rush TOUCHDOWN for 34 yds, after 4 plays 50 yd drive.

LSU: N/A

-

And of course I'm gonna look biased, but I still feel like even in the regular season game, Alabama put up more of a fight and had more fervor and desire to win, but just simply came up short. Not taking anything away from LSU, because they were practically equal with Alabama, but I still think the better team won the championship.

LSU was the best team that year. Bama had no business playing in that game
If that was the case the score would have been the reverse.

One team sure looked like they didn't belong. The one that never even had a chance to score.

The fact that LSU beat that Bama team with that defense is something LSU fans should be proud of.

and vice versa for Bama beating that LSU defense.

Mulligan game. frick you.

In my memory, we finished that year 13-0, SEC and National Champions. The real NC was played in Tuscaloosa in November. Once we won that and finished off by winning the SEC, in reality we had taken care of all of the business we needed to take care of. LSU has four national championships. 1958, 2003, 2007 and 2011. Greatest team in college football history.

It's how most of the country views the 2011 LSU team. Nobody cares about the "National Championship" game that year. That team will go down as one of the greatest teams ever.

If you were to watch both games back to back, it is essentially the same game, except Bama was able to get the ball closer and made the field goals that they missed in November.

Although there were some similarities, they were different games. LSU outrushed Bama by 50+ yards in the first game and held them to under 100 yards rushing. They only got in the red zone once. The closest they got to LSU's end zone was LSU's 17-yard-line. LSU got to the red zone three times (once because of an interception) and made it to the Bama 2-yard-line before having to kick a FG on 3rd down before half due to the time left.

LSU made some timely plays on offense in game #1 and was completely shut down in game #2. Also, LSU's D got stronger as the game went on and even drove Bama backwards in OT in game #1. LSU's D still played tough in the title, but the offense had no new wrinkles like the option wrinkle that Bama wasn't ready for in 9-6. Saban was ready. Miles was not.

Only the beginning of the end. In five years, Bama falls victim to some scandal and vacates two or three of those titles.
