ND has 19/24 starters (including special teams) returning. Last year was Brian Kelly's first year, and they went a solid 8-5 with a 4-game winning streak to close (emphasizes improvement made), even with injuries to the starting QB, RB, TE, WR, and NT. BK's first season is the same decent season that coaches such as Tressel, Carrol, Stoops, Meyer, and Saban had in their first years, and in the second, all made significant improvements.
You have ND losing to 3-9 Wake Forest, USC (when the Irish beat them on the road last year, and are playing them at home this year after a bye), Boston College (ND beat them by 18 on the road last year and play them home this year), and MSU (could definitely be a loss, but they needed a fake FG to beat ND at home at night last year, ND plays them home this year). I agree Stanford's a loss, but that's the only definite/likely one I see.

I think we should be around 15 or so. Not quite top-10 material just yet. The last two games of our season (SECCG and CFA Bowl) were dismal performances to close out what would have been a decent season.

I get the feeling that alot of people are putting Auburn in the top 25 just because they cant feel comfortable not ranking the defending national champion. Reality is not only will they have 4 to 5 losses but they will be ugly losses. Mullin/Miles/Saban/Spurrier (not to mention picking up FL on the schedule) will all hang as many as they can on AU now that the one trick pony has left town.

I'd have Alabama at number 1. I'd be pretty surprised if Michigan State is a top ten team next year. Ohio State may finish with a strong ranking, but they lose a lot on defense, so I actually don't think they'll be as good of a team as their final ranking may indicate. I feel like A&M won't finish that high, but I don't follow them that closely. Harbaugh drastically improved the quality of the Stanford team, but I'm interested to see how they do without him.

I actually like UF being ranked low in pre season polls. Not a ton of pressure on 1st time HC and it puts a chip on everyone's shoulder. We have the talent of a top 5 team, but we have too many uncertainties right now. A marginal win against UT and I think we will only get better as the season progresses. I'm more excited about next year than I've been since 2008.

Auburn wasn't really a one trick pony
Granted Cam was probably the best player in college football - but their OL and Fairly were pretty exceptional too
I don't think Dyer will carry the team on his own but they will have some playmakers next year... and yes probably finish with 7 or 8 wins IMO

I'm afraid if Arkansas is able to go 11-1 and win the SEC, that the voters would put two undefeated teams (b/w OU, Stanford, Boise St, FSU) in the championship over a one-loss, SEC Champ Arkansas.
Anyone else see that as a possibility for Arkansas or any other SEC team?

well it already happened to Auburn in 04
The SEC's prestige has gone even further up since then but when it comes to individual team rankings the team name, prestige, and recent success do color what the voters say... and the computers will typically rank an undefeated team higher than a 1 loss team... even if the undefeated played a much weaker schedule
so yes - it could happen for sure

The ESPN rankings seem a lot more accurate to me besides their obscenely high ranking for Boise State. For example, Michigan State is ranked too high while South Carolina is ranked too low. Michigan State is NOT a better team than South Carolina. South Carolina has a better coach and far superior talent to Michigan State. I also don't buy Texas A&M in the top 10 or Stanford as a top 5 team. Stanford lost Jim Harbaugh and the Pac 10 can't be any worse than it was this year. I'll be very surprised if they finish the season with one loss again.

i don't think they've done anything to deserve it besides playing in a pitiful Big XII, but i hope aTm goes into the preseason top 5. it'll help arkansas out if we beat a highly ranked OOC team.

There are 3 schools on that list that should not be ranked ahead of South Carolina and I'll let you figure them out on your own.
LSU at number 1 is ridiculous. Not saying that LSU won't wind up being in the National Title race all season long, but to put them at number 1 right now is just plain silly. Then again it's a preseason poll done by the media that has absolutely no impact on BCS standings so whatever.
