Nobody in the middle wants to go to a coaching graveyard. They can only pay out the arse for a proven winner who will fail because of the institutions culture or try an up and comer with no real proven history. Those guys like Kleiman and Leipold aren't gonna start grabbing their nuts and attending midnight yell for any amount.
A deal with Dion wouldn't surprise me here. Flashy, would make noise and draw attention to the fellows screaming "look at me!". But I don't think he could maintain 8 and 4.

Actually White Whale refers to something you've been obsessed with but you have no chance of landing. Like Ahab and Moby Dick. The white whale killed him because his obsession didn't allow him to think clearly.

This happens every, single, coaching search.
It always turns out that no, they didn’t have someone lined up. The leaked options probably were never in contention or considering the job. Then a name or two will emerge late in the process, and one of them will be signed.
