I suppose you have a point. aTm is definitely up and coming from a coaching job standpoint. I suppose anymore theres not much difference other than the money a school can offer. You have schools that can pay a coach 6+ mil and schools that can pay 1-3 mil. The scholarship limits etc changed a lot.

Does not compute, r2. A&M has the financial commitment, the facilities, and the recruiting grounds of a top 5 job. In fact, being the only SEC school in Texas is probably good enough to be top 10-15 by itself.

That won't stop the Trojans from trying again

I don't doubt they will try. But if he was ever going to leave for another college job, he would have split the first time USC came a-courtin'. If he didn't jump then, he's not going to now.
No, that all depends on how serious either/both parties are.

If Sumlin is interested and was considered last time, he now has a lot more leverage, as USC will want to "get it right" this time. Let's speculate that he wasn't offered enough to make the move last time; he can now ask for more. USC powers that be will be pushing to get it done regardless of cost.

In USC's favor, they are now out of the probation hole and have a pretty stocked talent base. They are right there to reclaim the West Coast from Oregon, who happens to be sliding.

Sumlin does have a flashy offense that would sell out there, but I just don't know if he's enough of a marquee name for them. I think they might try to poach an NFL coach.

Yep, when a school could no longer sign 100 kids just to keep them away from someone else it changed things dramatically.

no one has said he's the worst coach..

but he's never going to go places in the SEC with his style.. he's always good for multiple losses..

he would be better off suited at a major program like USC and a much more winnable PAC 12 (however many teams they have now) division..

Some of the people close to USC were completely confident they could have had Sumlin when the job was offered to Sark, so Finebaum isn't really blowing smoke.

We shall see

Sumlin still hasn't won a conference championship, much less a national championship. USC is not going to throw $6+ million at him until he does. If Sumlin wins the SEC or the national championship, only then would they be willing to pay that kind of money.

But then, at that point, A&M would gladly top whatever they offered. USC has much more history of winning than A&M. But A&M has a far greater THIRST to win than does USC. In no small part because it's been so long since we've won.

And if Sumlin has been recruiting well so far, his recruiting would skyrocket at A&M if he wins a championship. So at that point, Sumlin would be leaving for the promise of championships on the West Coast after already having won a championship in Texas.

Bottom line, Sumlin isn't going to USC. If he leaves, it's for the NFL.

A&M announced Sumlin signed his extension w/ A&M Nov. 30, 2013. Sark was announced as USC head coach on Dec. 2, 2013.

I doubt Sumlin is USC's first choice; I'm still thinking it's a current NFL coach. There are a couple who are not having good seasons right now, and have Pac 12 connections, that I expect the Trojans to come after hot and heavy.

As a program, USC is not far off. They were coming on well at the end last year under Coach O, who isn't a great head coach by any means. They just chose what seemed to be a great option in Sark, who turned out to be a total disaster. They have a window to fix things, but definitely must make the right move now.

Sumlin is a name being bandied about...one thing for sure (from what I've heard) is that the next hire will have no connection to the Carroll regime whatsoever

They would probably have to come up with $6-7M dollars to make the deal worth while. They would also have to come up with additional funds to make up for some of the current licensing/trademark deals that he is working with A&M.

It just doesn't make common sense, but Finebaum is just their to instigate rumors. Ed Ogeron and Tom Herman would be great candidates.
