I thought the biggest mistake Chavis made yesterday was lining up in a defense at the beginning of the game that dared Alabama to run the ball and then being slow to get out of it when it was clear Alabama was going to shove the ball down his defense's throat.

Ya, Although the defense was terrible in the 1st quarter, they didn't lose beccause of it. 3 pick 6s will do that though.

Chavis wasn't the problem, A&M just wasn't ready for tgat defense.

Still gave up ton of rushing yards which is exactly what his D did for LSU last season against Auburn and Miss St. That's what I saw yesterday which is a symptom of the real problem.

Well, it's kind of hard to know what it means when y'all seam to change the definition every other week.

3rd and Chavis means that when they have a long conversion to make(i.e. >10), which Alabama pretty much didn't have all game btw, you allow a first down conversion

How convenient. That's about the fourth or fifth definition I have seen.

First of all I like John Chavis, he is a very good DC, I think the way he handled leaving and recruiting for A&M while under contract to LSU is a bitch move but c'est la vie.

I don't think however the OP nor A&M fans truly get the 3rd and Chavis deal. Number 1 it was much more a UT thing than an LSU one. Second it's not really all that much about 3rd down in general.

It's more about situational defense and when he used pressure and blitzes and when he did not. While he led several top notch D's for LSU, and won several games for LSU, too often teams against us took advantage of yes 3rd and longs (on occasion) but also in end of half and end of game situations especially in big games, close games where one more stop mattered. Instances in the final 2 mins of halves.

Chavis won and lost games while at LSU.

I am sensing it makes you and Aggieland feel better posting these stats. More power to ya but going 5/17 in a blowout win or loss is not really getting the point.

I never really cared for the use of 3rd and Chavis. All I know is he is absolutely a lead killer with that stupid ducking prevent mindset he uses.

Basically he chocked a lot. Hold a team in check, yet we would hand him the lead late in the 4th and he fell apaprt like a cheap suit. Or any other 2 minute offense situation gave him fits.

He's gone, LSU is in first and just gave up only 14 points on defense to a top 10 team. And AtM got birch slapped at home by another top 10 team.

God they suck, and Chavis made the even worse. Now there enough film on his aTm tendencies and it will show from here in out.

Aggies definition of "3rd and Chavis" is waaaaay off of LSU'S definition. You saw how Florida had the ball with 1:31 to go, that is the perfect situation and really the only situation of which we refer to "3rd and Chavis"
So no one really cares what A&M has been doing on every third down....

Ask any Vol fan what the true meaning is of this term. LSU fans know it by heart. LSU under Chavis' defense while he was the DS at LSU, lost 7 games ( could have been 8 if Bad Bo doesn't throw the int at the end of the game last yr) on the other team's last possession of the game. That was the Vols' biggest issue with him, too. So keep all the charts on 3rd down plays you want. They are meaningless.

I just told you what it means. He's a good coach but not a solid coach. He gave up to many big plays on opponents last drives when we were up and ended up losing. Alabama knows all about this. If the games on the line against a top opponent and its 3rd and long. All you need is a stop to win. He'll call some basic prevent defense when press coverage has been your bread and butter all game and give up the big play. They'll score or get in field goal range and you'll truly know what it means.
