This thread has been highly entertaining. I agree with the premise that almost all teams cheat to some degree or another - especially if you define cheating loosely as living in the gray.

I agree that $100 handshakes go on everywhere. Smart programs make sure the HC is shielded with a high degree of plausible deniability of knowledge. Smart programs make absolutely certain that there is a very small number of people involved and/or with knowlege of the rule skirting. This is why it always kills me to see people attribute Bama's success to the REC. There may be members of the REC who are in the small network of individuals trusted with certain tasks, but the REC as a whole - with it's thousands of members - does not handle some organized network of recruiting activity.

Also, almost every staff has a "bagman". This is the guy on staff who does the dirty work while keeping others clean. This guy may have a hand in 2-3 recruits a year, but it doesn't mean that every highly rated kid that goes to a program did so because he was given something. It happens, but the $100 handshakes and jobs for family members are waaaay more common.

This post is very good.

I will say one thing. The bagman is typically not apart of the coaching staff (at least not anymore...that was an 80s/90s fad).

He isn't handing the cash out in every instance, but every staff has a guy who arranges it and that guy has - at times - been the one to give it. I can name that person at both Bama and AU.
