When has a college football coach ever recruited and offered a scholarship to someone who they think can't play and help them win?

Is it? There have been a few in the news lately but the overwhelming majority of players have not been arrested for DV.

Please note that I said "...looking like maybe..."

I am inclined to believe that the NFL's overt reactions of late are due in some part to its knowledge that the problem is far more widespread than has thus far been reported, and they are scared that if more truth gets out they'll look like real assholes.

I could be wrong, though.

Funny thing is:

They live in a state where it is the cop's fault for arresting him or the girl's fault for pissing him off.

"This is Alabama Football, dammit. Everyone in this state should know their role when it comes to our beloved team. Our players are above the law and our football prowess is a God-given gift. So don't get in the way of that and you can avoid exile to Mississippi ".

Any fan of a team that offered this guy a scholarship shouldn't be throwing stones.

Don't get me wrong! Harvard's football players in 1902, relative Harvard's general student population, were probably slapping their girlfriends around more, too.

Bringing up other schools just seems like a deflection to take the heat of bama. Their president had to personally approve him being admitted if I remember correctly. We will never know if another school would have actually done the same thing. I have seen schools recruit players before, but the player not be admitted by whatever group makes that decision

Bama deserves to get throttled a bit for this. Even most fans were against this signing, and he didn't even last 80 days. He couldn't even abstain through lent from choking a woman.

But this writer is kinda a douche....

Sadly, the ugly matter really goes beyond Alabama. Shouldn't there be a national policy in place that prevents players convicted of felonies -- and those who are accused of such crimes but who haven't yet faced criminal trials -- from transferring to other schools? Sure, people can be rehabilitated and learn from their mistakes, but that doesn't necessarily mean they deserve to play college football and receive a scholarship.

Domestic violence charges I can agree with, key the dust settle before a transfer. But to prevent any kid who catches a felony, you're guaranteeing they are going back to the hood, and probably to commit worse crimes to survive. Kick them/suspend them from the team. But let them stay in school while they try to learn their lesson.

Make no mistake: Alabama's decision wasn't about rehabilitation and second chances. It was about winning

Did anyone actually make that mistake?

I get what you're saying, but universities aren't rehab programs. Attending them is a privilege that you have to earn.

If you're concerned about the well-being of a felon, put him/her in a treatment facility. That applies to all students who cause problems like this. Guys like Taylor have no business being college students.

Not true. Our compliance office never cleared the offer, nor allowed him to visit. Maybe your's could learn a thing or two from that.

There's no such thing. And if there is then who's going to pay for it? This isn't Sweden.

Your post is good. Your sentiment is solid. But if he's not a football player then he isn't going to be a student, and if he's not a student then no one is going to pay to put him in a treatment center. We're back to square one, in other words. You either give him a chance to be a college football player or you send him back home an unemployable felon.

Recruited by two coaches that aren't here anymore. Glad we dodged that bullet
