ESPN monopoly power: “You’ll take 720p broadcasts and like it.”

Posted this as a reply in another thread, but wanted to vent in a dedicated topic.

Q: Why does ESPN still broadcast games in 720p when other platforms are moving into 4K?

A: Because they can.

ETA: It seems any expectation that 4K will be an option anytime soon is unrealistic. See my post on page 3. That being said, the product still looks subpar on an 82" QLED on YouTube TV, IMHO.

I've had 4k TVs for what feels like a decade at this point and they still can't showcase a fricking football game in high res.

Disney is in a death spiral. Literally nothing they have their tendrils in is a good product right now.

Yeah it's weird that almost everyone has a 4K TV at this point but nobody is broadcasting in 4K. There's almost no effort whatsoever

Maybe the internet providers can't handle the bandwidth? Idk

Its not a bandwidth issue that’s for sure. My best guess it’s because it cost more money.

I read somewhere that each camera is roughly $350k to setup to broadcast 4k. Take that times the amount of cameras for each game and I see why.

The numbers could be way off as I just heard that off hand

Yes that is expensive. Football and sports in general are also the single most lucrative broadcast rights in the world. Update your shite.

not to split hairs, but most, if not all, broadcasts are in 1080i.

If you’re using the internet, yes. That’s still only like 52%ish of America.

That and you have to pay for a more premium package to be able to watch the handful of games even available in 4k. Don't really see the value in paying for something with little to no return.

Those numbers are way off. Commercial 8K sports-quality broadcast cameras are around $50K, with some lenses costing almost as much.

Peanuts for a major media company, though.

It doesn’t really matter how much it cost. If you own the most lucrative broadcast rights, no matter what that content is, it follows at least in my mind that needs to come packaged with the most cutting edge tech available for the best consumer product. This will drive a trickle down effect eventually resulting in it being less expensive to do it from market demand resulting in more efficient and cheaper alternatives. So it goes even beyond just Disney being cheap and shite.

I have a youtube tv sub, and there's an option to pay for for 4k channels but only 2 channels available in 4k if you add that package, NBC and Fox.

Their stock just hit down around 82ish which is the lowest since 2014. Yes even lower than Covid crash. Everything they do sucks and not to get political here but for context Larry Fink and Blackrock have openly come out saying ESG will crack the American economy at this rate and we can’t keep doing this. Disney is the single biggest ESG oriented company in the world and are about to have to shell out 20 billion ish to buy out Comcast stake in Hulu. They have like 2 billion in operating cash based on their recent quarterly report so they either will need to take on massive amounts of debt equal to how much they stupidly bought fox for a few years ago or give their biggest competitor like 15% of Disneys whole fricking company in stock if their price doesn’t rise. They might truly be fricked.

I guess it’s because when I was a kid only 3-4 of your games in any given season were actually televised, and you had to adjust your rabbit ears and hold your mouth just right to see those, that I’m fine with 720p. I don’t need to see the plaque on their teeth or whatever.

Tooth if it’s an Alabama game, I guess.

As I posted above it goes beyond just the option of having 4K broadcast. They’re stifling innovation and cheaper market incentive options to be created for those that do want to implement it and as the holder of the broadcast rights for the most lucrative broadcast if they don’t have that responsibility who does?

I've also been following the rapid decline of Disney. To be honest, I'm super pumped about it. frick them.
